I’ve been reading an article on Linux and the WINE software (http://www.winehq.org/) that allows you to run Windows software programs (without installing a Windows operating system).
Has anyone experimented with running MapInfo in this environment, and if so, how successful (or not) was it?
Are there any things you would need to do to get MapInfo up and running?
Regards,
Bill
You could run it in "Virtual Box" .... it is pretty good, fast and
totally integrated (no dual boot or so). however you have to install
Windows (need for a license). See http://www.virtualbox.org/

I've been poking around the Open Source world for a while now, and even
though there are now a lot of options for GIS and mapping (particularly
for web-based apps), I've found nothing that works as well as MapInfo
for what it does.
And I'm not sure I'd like to see the end of commercially developed
software. There's some things produced by the commercial world that work
better than from the empire of the Penguin's and vice-versa. I like
having the choice, and I think it also sets up a dynamic market that
keeps developers from both worlds on their toes. The loss or total
domination of either one would be bad for all of us.

At present up to v6.5 can be copied from windows along with a couple of
dll's into the wine *windows* folder.
The only thing that does not work with wine 0.9.63[?], have not
installed 1.0 yet, is the drop down pickers for styles.
Evidently the color, line, style boxes are custom code and when you pick
a style then the dialog locks and the only way out is with the X.
Although you can navigate it with the up/down/left/right keys and it
works absolutely fine - just don't use the mouse.
Other than that it is a winner especially compared to what is natively
available for non-windows.
I can't speak for >v6.5, and since v9.0 [my last upgrade] I class as
malware for calling home, I doubt it will install and work
Come on PBMI, just clean up the non-standard dialogs, and you can clean
up in *nix market. And no, you don't have to give away the code.
I have run MapInfo 7.8 on OpenSUSE with Wine (not sure what version). I
also had some issues with opening workspaces, but nothing major.
Also watch out for the latest Windows Installer, I had some issue with
this (but not for MapInfo Pro).
And yes the picker dialogs are an issue, and it looks like they will be
more of an issue with 9.5.
Cheers Ian
