Some files crashing MapInfo in Win 10

The recent "Anniversary" update of Windows 10 has resulted in "mis-behaviour" of some (but not all) of my MI .TAB files. Attempting to open one of those "bad" files crashes MI and produces two messages: "MapInfo Professional for Windows application file has stopped working", and "There was a problem sending the command to the program."

I have installed an open-source GIS package which opens the "bad" files, so it seems the "bad" files are not broken.  From the Open-source package I exported the "bad" MIF/MID pair back to MI, which successfully imported them and produced the corresponding .TAB file.  Opening that .TAB file in MI crashes MI as it did before.

I have searched the Web and it seems that Windows Excel users have had a similar problem for some time before Win 10.  Those users cured the problem by changing Registry entries but I haven't been able to find similar entries for MI.  (And messing in the Registry is for me not a task I relish.)

Any assistance and guidance to cure this problem will, as ever, be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Stephen Baig

Hi,

I also experienced issues with MapInfo 16 (evaluation license) after that update, but it was a quite different issue since it prevented me from starting MapInfo.

I think you may need to re-install MapInfo. Also consider only MapInfo 15.0 and onwards are certified for Windows 10.

Hi Stephen,
I am having the same problem. After installing the Anniversary update MI crashes whenever I try to open a TAB-file. Did you find any solution to this problem?
Best regards,
Markus

Hi Markus,

I took the 30-day test option for MI-16 and the old files correctly loaded and were operable.  That's the only MI fix I can find.  I'm testing a couple of open-source GIS systems and both QGIS and SAGA are stable with my MI data files.

I hope this helps.

One of the automatic updates of Win 10 has now fixed this issue. After updating and rebooting today, Mapinfo can open TAB-files without crashing.
