Hello All,

Does anyone out there have any experience with software that can
convert a raster image (georeferenced) to a georeferenced vector
table? Essentially if I have JPGs of maps with regions represented as
a single unique color, I'd like to find software that can create that
polygon in a form that can be imported in MapInfo. I've searched on
the web and I've found a couple of tools but just playing around with
the demo's I'm not convinced they will handle the georeferencing
aspect of it properly.

Does anyone out there have any experience with this that could help me
out?

thanks

Ali

Hi Ali,
I've personally used this software to georeference and vectorize 100+
scanned maps using a batch autotrace function and then exporting to
mapinfo tab format.
There was no problem with georeferencing whatsoever, the main issue
will be on the complexity and quality of your input rasters and the
time tweaking parameters for the vector filters before batching.
Here's a real-life example of the input/quality of output.

There's a lite version of the software that comes with datasets &
exercices for testing.

I like GridTranslator Pro (http://www.geomaticssystems.com/Products/GTPMapInfo.htm). It can convert almost any raster or grid file into a Vertical Mapper grid, which can subsequently be contoured (aka vectorised).

Hi,

You could go open source. Grass has such fucntionality, grass.itc.it/gdp/grass5tutor/HTML_en/c1451.html, and has a windows gui front end or download as part of QGIS ( www.qgis.org/ ).

Other tools you could try include Sextante, derived from SAGA Gis I believe, try as part of GVsig.

Have you looked at the latest version of Vertical Mapper - v3.7.
New feature to convert raster to vector - especially aimed at land areas/polygons from aerial photos.

Wow. I didn't expect so many informative replies in such a short time.
This community is awesome. I will be looking into global mapper as
well as a vertical mapper solution. Thanks guys for your great
support.
