We have some map files created in a Visual Cadd program.  We can save our layered file to a dxf file or shape file.  I tried using Map info's "import" but had no luck.  Then tried using the Universal Translator to bring in the dxf file into mapinfo.  When we brought in the newly created tab file you can see all the layers checked under the "Layer Control" but nothing shows up on the screen.  Any ideas on how to make my tab file show up with all the layers?  Thanks, Charley

Did you try "view entire layer" on each layer? And you might try opening a browser window for each layer to see if there are any objects in it.

I'll follow Rich's lead with another item from the list of common mistakes.
Did you set the projection yourself when using Universal Translator, or did you let it choose.

This list generally concurs that best results come from choosing the projection yourself, even if there is a prj file in the shape-file suite.

Hi, thank you for your response.

Yes, I have selected "view all layers"  and yes, I chose my own projection.

I noticed late yesterday that if I do not choose any projection, just non-earth, it will bring in and show most of the layers.  Then, I add the missing ones.  But, this doesn't do me any good unless I can fit it to a projection.  Any ideas on that?  Is there a way to try and georeference it to lat/long or x-y coordinates?  PS:  I should mention that I don't use this program very much so am a novice at getting around it.  Thanks.

Hi
I think   when you convert  shp file to tab file through universal translator. There is  set on projection problem. Again  you try and set projection properly.  It may be resolved .

Hi, you are right, I changed my projection and it seems to work, all I had to do was set scale and change colors for each layer as it came in all black.  I am now trying to overlay this file over a Mr. Sid photograph and not having any luck at all.  Any ideas?  Thank you.

You mean your data is in right position now, and doesn't sit over the sid file...Weird..

Your new problem probably deserves a new thread w/ a new subject line. You'll get more peopple reading it.

Sounds like you still have a coordinate system mismatch. Check the SID's coordinate system by command
   Table>Raster>Modify Image Registration>Projection
Does it match your imported DXF layer's projection?

Hi Richard,
I checked the projection and it is the same as the one I assigned to the dxf file.  Will try this again on Monday.  One question, when you bring in all your TAB  layers and you change the colors and lines is there a way to save the changes?  Thanks.

A new question gets more notice if it's in a new thread. But short answer, there are a couple ways to save the colors. The "CAD" way is to make a layer editable, select one or more objects on the layer, then use the corresponding style button from the toolbar. The "corresponding style" button will be the text, point, line or polygon button with the small question mark superimposed on it. The save your changes. The "GIS" way is to assign attributes to object and the thematically render each object based on its attribute.

Charley,
The answer, aside from philosophical considerations, is "save table." You made the table editable, you modified stylistic characteristics, so you just save the table (save changes). All your hard work will be preserved.

It's been said more than once on this list that objects should be assigned attributes and then, by selecting all objects with those attributes, styles can be assigned in one fell swoop. But I can vouch that it works both ways (in GIS), and each way has its power.

If I'm digitizing a geologic map from field sheets, I commonly create several objects that will be of the same class, select them all, and assign a color fill (for polygons, or line style for arc elements), in order to monitor progress. This process may proceed through several different object classes (e.g., object groups of different colors). Then using a common tool such as "select by style," I choose all of a particular color and assign attributes via "table, update column." We're human beings; we recognize patterns. In the early stage of file creation I use color as if it were an attribute, no matter how fleeting. Admittedly, in later stages as the table grows in complexity, the selection is almost always by one of the attributes.

This morning I downloaded a trial version of Visual Cadd 6.0.  I exported my VCD file as a DXF file and then used the Map info universal Translator to import the dxf file, using a North American coordinate system projection.  Good news, all layers came in and had the same layer colors as in Visual Cadd.  I went to map options to change my distance units from meters to feet and area units to acres.  But now the scale is wrong.  Any suggestions on changing the scale?  It says 1"=3,515' and I need 1=1,320'

Thanks for helping me, this is so frustrating and you all have been great in helping.

Hi, just wanted you to know that I was able to finally make it work.  I had to get two sets of coordinates from the Mr. Sid Photo.  Then went back to Visual cadd and set those same coordinates to my cadd file.  Then exported out the cadd file as a DXF and used Universal Translator to import it in using the same projection -US state plane 1983.  Once I did that I was able to overlay the new tab files over the Mr. Sid photo.  Thanks to both this forum and the Visual Cadd forum for all advice in making this work!
