I am trying to import a dxf map into a mapinfo workspace, but MI won't
let me! So, I translated the dxf file with universal translator,
which resulted in various different labeled tab-files, that were
strangly filled with all the same useless data.
Does the importing/translating have anything to do with the version of
ACAD the dxf was built in? How can I import the dxf file? I also have
the dwg file would that be better to use for anything in MI?
Would the problem be that the file was first non-earth, and I changed
it into the right projection and datum to import into a georeferenced
MapInfo workspace?
Does someone have a free mbx tool that can import the dxf files?
Does anyone have any experience with this? If so, could you please
point me in the right direction/ help!?
Thanks in advance,
Cheers, Arne

You might try "Any DWG DXF Converter". The freebie version allows you to
convert dwg's to dxf's and vice-versa while also allowing you to revert
versions of either.
My situation, I had a DWG I presume was created with the latest version of
Autocad. I'm still runing MI 6.5 and UT would not translate the DWG. I also
suspected it might have been corrupt, but don't know for sure.
So I converted this dwg to an older version using Any DWG DXF which allowed
UT to import into MI just fine.
Your milage may vary!

ohhh... yes, I do not have ACAD so I cannot check/adjust the file!
Should I work through ArcGIS, would that work?
Thanks again.
Cheers

I have had a lot of experience with importing ACAD DXF and DWG files
into MapInfo (versions 3.0 to 8.0) and have found that the import file
function in MI doesn't work very well for importing DXF files and it
makes no difference whether the ACAD file is 12 or 13. I have always
used universal translator which creates a tab file for each layer.
One problem I did encounter when I was importing some ACAD files into
MI V6.5 was that Universal Translator would fail if there were spaces
in the AutoCAD file name.
When I translate AutoCAD non-earth files into MapInfo I have always
translated them into non-earth MapInfo files and then translated these
non-earth MapInfo files into UTM projection. This is an extra step
and is a pain when the ACAD file has a lot of layers but it does
work.
I have used universal translator to convert AutoCAD 2000 DWGs into MI
V8.0 (but I couldn't convert them with MI V6.5) but I'm not sure about
newer versions of AutoCAD or MI. The Universal Translator in MapInfo
is actually a dumbed-down version of the Feature Manipulation Program
(FME) available from Safe Software Inc (http://www.safe.com). The FME
program allows you to go directly from AutoCAD DWG or DXF (any
version) to many different GIS formats including MapInfo but it isn't
free or even cheap (the lowest level is over $1000 CAD). I have tried
a trial version of FME and it works very well especially if your
AutoCAD layer has a rotation factor involved in the transformation.
It is a one-step solution which transforms ACAD non-earth to MI with
whatever projection/datum/coordinate system that you require provided
that you know the transformation formula and I think that you can
specify the output as one file or many. I'm not trying to be a
salesman for the program but it could save a lot of time if you have
many files to translate.
Hope this helps
