Hi everyone,

About four months ago I started to undertake a project on an analysis of the determinants of the Sierra Leonean Civil War. The creation of the dataset used in the study was done entirely on MapInfo. I was lucky enough to stumble across this forum and ask many questions for help. Every major problem I had was solved in one way or another. As such, the project was completed on time and in good shape. Without the kind help of people on this forum the quality project would probably have suffered quite alot. So thanks to all who are generous enough to help out on here.

The results of the project were fairly interesting: with areas with more roads being positively linked to the occurrence of conflict events, areas with more diamonds were linked to conflict during the middle part of the civil war, areas with a higher population were linked to conflict during the middle and end of the war, and finally areas in proximity to neighbouring country Liberia were positively linked to conflict at the beginning of the civil war. Similar results for studies looking at civil conflict in other studies have been found before in the conflict literature so the dataset seemingly worked well.

Best wishes all and I hope to be using MapInfo again soon.

Duncan
