Hi Guys

I"m a noob here and new to this forum, I was wondering if the members
here can assist me with a problem.

I just recently purchased a Garmin GPSMAP 62 and I would like to
transfer the maps from Mapinfo onto the unit.

Their are multiple files being layered to construct the map
(topography, rivers, roads) i've also got some map outline of
properties that I would like to visit and explore (Australian Outback
adventure)

Because i'm not so familiar with Mapinfo, I"m not sure what files I
will need (Tab, MIF etc) to convert them into GPX nor am I familiar
with the softer needed to convert the files over.

I have tried a couple already without any success:

FWTools 2.4.7
All applicable Garmin software.

The trouble is, i'm so noob, I don't know where to start.
what file formats need to be converted and which software to use in
order to convert them and finally how to install it onto the GPS.

My friends and I would be so grateful if someone on this forum with
the knowledge can show us how to do this, we've being planning this
trip for some time now, and it's kind of like living a childhood dream
(now that we're old enough)

Thank You all in advance and taking the time to hear me whinge.

Hi,

I never use 62 series, but if it is the same with the other series then your garmin map file should have *.IMG extension.

You can check that by exploring your GPS memory card in your desktop.

To be able to build an IMG file for your garmin you've got to use two software name cGPSMapper and GPSMapEdit. cGPSMapper is to compile a polish format *.mp that stores your data. GPSMapEdit is to convert your mapinfo file to polish format. You can even use GlobalMapper to build a polish format.

Some workaround have been offered here ini the list if I'm not mistaken. Try search the list about inserting a map to your garmin device.

Zery

Hi Simplychen,

It depends on what you are attempting to transfer - Raster or vector. On the 62 Raster maps (or "images" from Mapinfo) can be transferred easily via KML custom maps.Send your map to Google Earth and then transfer the created KML file to the Custom Maps folder on your gps. There are some limitations but that is well documented in the GPS manual and the Garmin website. This method is good for smaller areas.

The Blue Marble Graphics GPS add on will not work for the 62 GPS's.

Zerys suggestion is good if you want to permanently save a heap of data to your GPS. For occasional points and polylines there are several programs that will accomplish this - personally I use Oziexplorer - import kml file created from Mapinfo and then load to gps.

Cheers - Phil

Simplychen,

I build my own vector maps for aGPS62 all the time for work, using the
cGPSMapper - GPSMapEdit software. Basically from MapInfo you export
the TAB file as MIF format, import the MIF into GPSMapEdit, select the
projection, styles etc, select various map attributes, save to polish
format then export in garmin mapsource format which you them drag
directly into the Garmin. There are a few things you need to consider
- importantly you can only import one object class at a time in
GPSMapEdit (e.g. point, polyline or polygon) so if your table includes
multiple object types you need to split it up (unless I've been
missing something all this time - can anyone confirm this???). Not
sure how much the software is now but i don't think its too much - i
purchased it about 3 years ago now. I remember spending hours upon
hours searching for an easy way of transferring data from mapinfo -
garmin. I'm still running on MIPro8.5 so not sure if improvements have
been made. Ultimately GPSMapEdit was the cheapest fix and despite the
messing around, it has been pretty reliable.

I've also played around with geting raster images on the gps via
software G-Raster which is pretty fussy but gets the job done, though
you really need to make trade offs between image resolution and area.
The program is freeware but you get additional options if you register
for a small fee.
