I wonder what this means for MapInfo's MapMarker and Group 1's geocoding
products...

Well, Pitney Bowes bought Group 1 a couple of years ago, and it hasn't
affected their geocoding software so far, so I don't think MapInfo is
headed for the glue factory anytime soon...

The Group 1 purchase was more of just a purchase. Now with the purchase
of MapInfo Pitney Bowes owns two competing geocoding products. I wonder
if one will go away or if they will be merged at some point in time, or
left alone. It's tough to manage two competing products, tho...

Not just 2 competing geocoders but maybe 4.  They already have Sagent which was a desktop based geocoder, Group1 which owned the mainframe market, add MapMarker and if they acquire BusinessObjects, they would have FirstLogic, which was bought last year by BusinessObjects.  I don't know offhand of any other Geocoders, unless you count the postal based applications like ZP4, Accumail, MelissaData etc.  It's a Geocoder conspiracy.  And, they know where you live.
