Hello all,

One of the tools in MapInfo 12 32bit my workplace uses is the “Overview” tool.

This tool generates a cloned & synced map window that provides an overview of the existing map window. The new map window is zoomed out and the extents of the current map window are represented by a red rectangle in the cosmetic layer. This provides an overview to the map reader when on the layout.

I can’t find the equivalent tool in MapInfo 12.5 64bit?

Cheers,

Nick

You can use the version from MapInfo Pro 32bit.

The tool is loaded and accessible thru the Tools window.

I did a small test and it seems to work fine in 64bit – especially when making the overview window a docked window

home tab > tools

Options > register tool

Name tool "Overview" or similar > browse to the installation folder for the 32bit version then the tools folder
(ie: C:\Program Files (x86)\MapInfo\Professional_12.5\Tools)

open the overview.MBX tool

Home tab > tools > registered

find your newly added tool and set to load / auto load.

at this point if the tool includes buttons you'll find it in the LEGACY tab, if it just added a new menu you'll find that menu in the LEGACY tab also.

Finally if the menu was added to an existing menu you have to right click the tool in the tool menu to bring up the old menu.

hope this clears things up.

right click on the short cut on the desktop / start menu and that should tell you where it is

yours will look more like this i'd image

C:\Program Files (x86)\MapInfo\Professional\Tools

or if you have a 32 bit os

C:\Program Files\MapInfo\Professional\Tools

Hi Peter,

That is certainly something I can do personally on my own desktop.

However, I manage about 800 installations of MapInfo in my organisation. It would be very helpful if the Overview tool were restored to being part of the standard installation of MapInfo in a future version. If not v15, then hopefully v15.5

I have submitted this to the ideas portal.

Cheers,

Nick

not ideal but you could do it via a registry edit and get every user to double click the file this would save some time.

save the following as a .reg you'd need to change the mapinfo version (1000), the tool name and the mbx path.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MapInfo\MapInfo\Professional\1000\Tools\11921]
"Title"="TOOL NAME"
"Location"="X:\\Path\\Tool.MBX"
"Description"=""
"Owner"="USER_DEFINED"
"Autoload"=dword:00000001

Is it possible for anyone from Pitney Bowes to get the source code for the Overview Tool as I would like to convert it to be easier to use in 64 bit

Thanks
CARL

Hi Carl

The Overview tool has been added to MapInfo Pro 17.0

You can see it in the second beta release that we published on Li360 yesterday

The source code for the tool will come with MapBasic 17.0

You can find the old source code with any version of MapBasic in the Samples folder
