Hi

Does anyone know the ascii code for approximately equal to (the two squiggles).  Most places have it listed as 247 but this comes up as divide symbol for me in MapInfo.

Thanks

Hi,

Most places I have looked has 247 as the divide symbol, so I think it just
doesn't exist within the ASCII range (which is really only 0-127). You may
be out of luck.

If you open the windows character map, using verdana unicode you will find
the ≈ symbol as 2248 (hex).

The Unicode for “approximately equal to” can be seen in (say) Microsoft Word, or (a free, Windows utility, always installed) a small application called Character Map.

  = character 2248

Windows XP start menu – Programs » Accessories » System Tools – choose the Character Map

Whatever the standard character font set (eg, Arial) you should get the character using 2248. The tool allows you to “go to” the Unicode character.

But what is your version of MapInfo? I thought MI was restricted in its use of Unicode characters.

Carolyn,
if you can settle for one squiggly line (tilde), you can use

chr$(126)

MapInfo (Latin) seems to only allow ascii decimal codes 32-255
described on this page http://www.ascii.cl/htmlcodes.htm

carolyn,

i believe you have a good point in bringing this up, however, we had
difficulty with the same problem and since we couldn't find something
simple enough to use for labelling on the maps, we just used a
substitute symbol which is the tilde (~) as a prefix to denote
approximately equal to...a footnote/note on the map legend would make
these labels more understandable (e.g. note: the symbol ~ indicates
"approximately equal to")
