Fellow mappers

It is possible to create a KML file in MapInfo and have it display on Google Earth.

I can also use a program called MAPPERG and put a MapInfo polygon onto Google Map but within MapInfo itself. It isn’t interactive like putting a boundary onto GE as I can only offer my client an image.

My question is this, is there a way of applying a boundary to  Google Map in the same way that a KML file applies a boundary to GE ?

Hello Bill,

Did you have a look at the MapInfo Professional Link Utility for
Google Earth?

This tool is available in the Tool Manager. If you do not find it
there you can always download it from
http://www.pbinsight.com/support/product-downloads/item/mapinfo-professional-link-utility-for-google-earth

Please note: to create a KML file with this tool you first have to
select the records you want to export to Google Earth.

Egge-Jan

Hi Bill

I hope that I have understood correctly - you would like to post a MapInfo tab boundary into Google Earth? If you have Google Earth Pro (which doesn't cost very much), you can upload MapInfo tab files as well as other proprietary GIS files like ESRI shp etc.

If you want to view a Mapinfo layer ontop of Google Earth (which isnt
what you want to do) but may be of use, i would look at GEScene:

http://www.directionsmag.com/files/index.php/view/731

Works well if you want to look at small polygon areas in Google earth

Hi, have you tried the google earth tool in mapinfo itself. Or if you go to directions magazine online and search the tools section there are a load of tool in there. http://www.directionsmag.com/files/index.php/search/?submit=1&q=google&software_id=0&date=0

Hope that helps

Thanks all for the reply. I use that function to create KML files to send to GE but I now want to do the same thing with Google Map and in a similar fashion.
The topic is still under discussion and I am getting replies from many members for which I am very grateful.
To reiterate, I want to apply boundaries to Google Map in the same way that I can apply them to Google Earth but there doesn't seem to be a way of bringing them onto the GM page as there is in GE Pro (file open function).
One suggestion I have had is to point GM to a server but I don't understand that suggestion yet. I am still investigating.
Regards to all from freezing Canberra

Bill - You cannot treat GE and GM's the same, they are fundamentally
different. GM is a browser based service. I you want to add custom
graphics to a GM map then you must create a GM mashup. This requires
interfacing with the GM API and having a server to host your GM on.

Bill,

These links should help. Use the GE Link Utility to create the KML file. Note that the KML file must be hosted somewhere on a web server (i.e. available via http), you cannot store them locally. However, the HTML file can be local, without requiring an API key etc (at least, it seems to work that way for me)

Please everybody stop answering this thread with Google Earth related information. The guy wants information on Google Map which is another ball game, and one that I am interested in as well.
If you dont know the difference between Google Eath and Google Map, find out.

I though my info was about Google Maps....?

Did you look at the links I provided before writing that email Mats?

No I did not which was a terrible mistake for which I am sorry.
Hey everybody look at Tim's reply above, that is the trick to do it.

Your GE Link reference threw me on the wrong track of thought.
Your links are really interesting and I shall certainly explore that track further.
And as long as you are working with kml files, there is nothing MapInfo specific about it if I understand this right?
Perhaps you could help us with some tips on how to best configure GE Link for the best output?

Best regards Tim, and apologies again for a hasty judgement, at least for your reply.

Hi,

http://stevnskom.dk/Valgdistrikter/Valgdistrikter3.htm

http://www.stevns.dk/page4024.aspx

The two links above are examples that show some simple visualizations in Google Maps including two buttons as layer controls.

The second link is just to show a way to include a map in an iframe on the 'main' website.

·         I use the GE Link utility to create a kml file from a selection in MI.  This selection can include attributes that are shown in the Google Map (and in GE).

·         I have NOT succeeded with displaying the KML file on the web directly. (I do not understand why! It should work - maybe a Danish problem?!)

·         In GE I create styles and then save the KML as a KMZ file that is transferred to the website.

·         The rest is just a little javascript and can be viewed as source and stolen from my (or any other) website.

·         Remember to get a Google Maps key before you begin: http://code.google.com/intl/da/apis/maps/signup.html

·         Remember that the web server shall handle the MIME types according to this: http://code.google.com/intl/da/apis/kml/documentation/kml_tut.html#kml_server

Regards

Søren Breddam
