Reprojection between UTM zones WGS 84 can be very tricky and introduce inaccuracies.
The general topographic map of Greenland 1:250K and some parts in 1:100K is produced in UTM Zone 24 WGS84, and the towns and villlages mapped in scale 1:500 in the specific zones 19 to 27 as small islands in - so to speak - a sea of sparsely mapped terrain.

Regularly we need to use a map outside a specific village, and consequently perform a reprojection of the topographic map to the local zone, eg. zone 24 to 22, or more interesting zone 24 to 19.
FME, MapInfo, and Proj4 based open source GIS applications are not able to reproject data in UTM without inaccuracies in my opinion and experience, as they use the basic  TMERC based on Snyder and not the extended transverse mercator ETMERC based on König & Weise.

This is particularly the case when it comes to Greenland areas in the Arctic. I've made tests using FME, OGR and MapInfo, where I took a detailed town map in zone 19 in the very North, reprojected to zone 24 and back to zone 19 to check for performance in accuracy. All packages failed and misplaced the objects with about 800-900 meters.

Only the KMSTrans2012 software with KMSTrLib using the Engsager Extended Transverse Mercator were able to perform accurate transformations, and also now the latest GDAL in QuantumGIS utilizing the proj4.8 library, which includes the ETMERC,

So my question is: When would it be possible to use MapInfo for accurate UTM reprojections depending on ETMERC (or latest proj4.8)?

Hi,
I've attached the data.
I perform this test in various software (OGR2OGR, KMSTrans2012, FME, MapInfo, MicroStation):
1. Original data in UTM Zone 19 WGS84 of the particular town.
2. Reprojection to UTM Zone 24 WGS84, which is the central zone running North-South in Greenland (look at http://en.nunagis.gl)
3. Reprojection back to UTM Zone 19 WGS84.
4. Check for differences between new file in zone 19 and original.

I've not been able to attach files, can you give me your email address?

Karl
