Hello,

I'm mainly using the 64 bit version of MapInfo Discover Bundle and quite often use data from laserscanning for digital elevation models. The point data is stored in LAS-files, but I get an error message when trying to open them in Raster. Going via RASTER - Create Raster - Triangulation, I select the LAS-file(s) as the input file, but then I get the error message that " An error occured readin the LASzip file". I tried both Create Raster and Create Raster Multifile.

However, the LAS-files work nicely when using the 32 bit version of  MapInfo Discover bundle and the Surface module of Discover, thus I can exclude that the LAS-files are corrupt.

Any suggestions why they don't work in the 64 bit version?

Best regards,
Martina Schäfer

Hi Martina,

Ideally 64bit version of MapInfo Raster should work with LAS file. Would it be possible you to share your LAS file with me.
Therefore, I could check why it is not working for you.

Thanks

Hi,

I tried to attach one of the smaller LAS -files, but even when zipped it was too large and exceeded the limits for the group. Thus I try with a link instead:

Hope this works and that you find out what's the problem.

Thanks for helping,
Martina

Hello Martina,

I downloaded your LAS file and it is readable (although that does not mean there isn't anything wrong with it).

A tip - if you search for LASTOOLS you will find a handy program called LASZIP which will convert your "LAS" file to a "LAZ" file. This tool will shrink this 164 MB file to 46 MB. You can load LAS and LAZ files into Pro and switching to LAZ format makes the files more manageable.

I gridded your data using a beta version of MapInfo Pro 17. I picked out the "ground" classified last returns and, via triangulation, produced a nice DEM. Picture attached.

Regards,
Sam.

Hello Sam,

thank you for your reply and your tip.I ran into a similar problem with another software for analysing satellite images, and tried the same solution - moving the files to a folder with a shorter path, i.e. an external harddisk. I think the problem might be due to my computer being in Swedish and using my name "Schäfer" while the softwares in English cannot handle the "ä".

From the external harddisk, I could open the files and gridd the data.

Best  regards,
Martina
