Hello all,

I am running MapInfo Pro v2019

Is there a way of disabling the creation of a ghx file upon opening a raster?
This specific raster is a ecw file and it is stored in a folder with read-only access.

My suspicion is that MapInfo wants to create a ghx file, but cannot as it lacks write access, and then fails.

Hi Nick

The GHX captures statistics from the raster when loaded through the new Raster Handlers.

If the folder is read-only, the GHX file should get stored in a temporary location.

You can try to uncheck the support for ECW from the advanced Raster support via Options, MapInfo Pro Raster, Preferences, Raster Formats.

You need to uncheck for both Native Formats and GDAL Formats.

I tried viewing an old ECW on a DVD in the latest MapInfo Pro 2021.

Pro insists on writing a TAB file, but you can place it on your hard disk instead of the DVD.
For an ECW there is no external overview cache required, so it opens up in Pro.
If an overview cache file is required, it will write it into a temporary location. If it is small enough it just stays in memory.

You can then use the Advanced Color dialog to change the way the ECW renders. This is only possible if a GHX file is being written somewhere because the rendering engine gets all of its information from the GHX file. It is being written into the Windows temporary folder. Once you close the raster, your GHX file and your rendering properties will be lost.

It is not a good system, but it did work for me. I don't think there would be any difference between 2019 and 2021 in this regard.

If you are interested in a better system, check out my new software "ProRaster" on the Microsoft Store.

Hi Nick

GHX files are good.
MapInfo also creates a .pprc file.
We recommend opening the ecw (or tif) on a local drive, perhaps, before copying to the read-only location.
It is a one-off process.
