Hi All,

I have  a terrain elevation data (SRTM) in an asc. file.
After I create the .tab file in mapinfo, I would like to access the elevation points.
But I am not able to creat points.

Any help please?!!?

MapInfo Professional has some (limited) 3D functionality.

Actually you can open an *.asc directly in Mapinfo Professional:

Go to File > Open... and select 'Files of type: Grid Image' and point to your *.asc file.

In the Map Window you can use the Info tool to query the value attached to each point.

If you need more 3D functionality you might consider one of the 3D add-ons to MapInfo Professional, Vertical Mapper or Discover 3D.

If you simply need to create points from the dataset, you could take a look at the MapBasic tool MIG Toolbox; I’m pretty sure you can download this for free, google it. You can use it to convert your ascii to an XYZ file and then create points from the X and Y fields.

With a large ascii file the conversion may take a long time…

Hope this helps,

Just to clarify Tom's comment: you would only need Discover (or VM?), not Discover 3D; this thread's requirement is actually not a true 3D need.

Discover's comprehensive Surfaces toolbox will allow the interpolation or stamping of a grid from SRTM .asc files. It also supports raw SRTM HGT files, as well as LIDAR .LAS terrain data.

The resulting gridded surface can then be further processed, eg contouring, clipped, reprojected, grid calculations, region inspections, slope and drainage analysis, overlay, line of sight calcs, etc.
