I've posted similar questions before, but just wanted to see if there
was any new advice out there.

Q: Would anyone know of a tool to direct import/export GPX files to
MapInfo (8.5)?

I still find the difficulties in linking GPS to GIS (MIPro) really
hard to understand (the current 'link' is via two garmin programs and
editing in excel). I dont care whether its Garmin's or MI's issue, i
just think its a no-brainer that gps-gis interchange should be a key
facility in both.

cheers

Hi Craig,

I couldn't agree more, although it has got a lot easier in 10.5 with the Blue Marble Graphics interface (for just straight download versus real time tracking). I still struggle with GPS -> GIS and back to GPS. I use a combination of things. I generally create KML files of objects using the standard export to Google functions. I then created a batch file that uses GPSBabel to upload the kml to my GPS. The advantage of this is no issue with datums/projections.

Also look out for gpx2tab - a mapbasic function to import gpx files.

On the reverse side of the equation you can also create a batch file for GPSBabel to download from gps to GPX and then use the gpx2tab to get it into Mapinfo.

Garfile is slowly going out of fashion as Garmin keeps changing protocols (It won't work with newer GPS's like 62S). having said that , neither does Blue Marble Graphics work with the 62S. They have indicated it might be supported in a future release but no dates yet.

Of course, good old OziExplorer will handle just about anything and will create shapefiles for you that you can read immediately in MapInfo. I use that in 90% of the time if data is just being viewed and not manipulated. It will also open KML's and allow you to load that file to your GPS.

Cheers - Phil

cheers

I uploaded an updated utility to the groups files (which is currently
down). If it is not there I can send it to you.

Hi Craig

We have to convert to and from GPS files all the time.
We use a freeware product called GPS Utility which you can download
from here:
http://www.gpsu.co.uk/index.html

If you need to translate more than a few points you will need the
shareware version - but it is a bargain anyway for all the file
formats it deals with.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I've tried garfile, gpsutility, and
several other third party apps to get the simplest solution, but they
are all extra steps. I've also tried gpx2tab but havn't been able to
get that to work (yet). This is actually along the lines of what i'm
after, i.e. a direct MI - GPS facility. Rob, if this is what you've
produced I'd love to have a look.

Many thanks

I've used GPS Utility to convert GPX files into MapInfo format with
good success. http://www.gpsu.co.uk

It's not the most impressive looking tool but it does a good job of
converting between many different formats.

I haven't used this option within Global Mapper, but it appears to support conversions from GPS to MapInfo.

No the utility I use only imports GPX files from the the computer, it
does not interact with the GPS at all..

One extra step is better than three. I'll wait until the file link is
up and have a look, thanks rob.

You could just use ogr2ogr, one step to push gpx or a heap of different formats to TAB or whatever you like, you can reproject etc etc.

James, i guess my original point is that there is no direct linkage
from MIpro to GPS. ogr2ogr is simply another intermediate step.

Rob, the file link to your utility is still not up, any chance of
getting it via some other means?

I also have an update on this issue. I'm sure a few of you have
already found this piece of freeware from the Minnesota Dept Natural
Resources:

http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/mis/gis/tools/arcview/extensions/DNRGarmin/DNRGarmin.html

WHile its been designed specifically for ESRI, it can be run as stand
alone program, and allows you to:
- live feed from a garmin GPS (can only plot within the ESRI suite but
also has ability to collect and save live data to a file)
- to import a range of file types (inlcuding gpx)
- export in various formats (inlcuding shapefiles which can obviously
be read directly into MapInfo).

The software recognises garmin USB connections and most models up to
the 62 series, which I use. I've been fidling around with it and can
now collect gps data, save it as a shapefile and open file directly
into MIPro, thereby removing 3 intermediate steps.

My question is this: If this freeware can do it, why can't GeoTracker
or some built in function of MIPro?

Craig,

The newest version of MIPro is packaged with an updated version of the
Bluemarble software. The new capabilities of Bluemarble offer the
option to download waypoints from a GPS within MI. I tested it
briefly when I evaluated MI10.5 and decided I still prefer my process
of ExpertGPS-Excel-Database-MI or ExpertGPS-Global Mapper-MI. It's a
bit tedious, but I require all the GPS data to end up in the database
with a particular set of field populated anyways.

I'm always surprised that more applications haven't been developed for
connecting MI to a GPS. I would love to do it, but my programming
skills are not up to the task at hand. It certainly can be done
because Encom has a decent solution with Discover Mobile. It's a bit
more complex and cost-intensive than handheld GPS though. It just
depends on what you're doing with the it.

Perhaps this will give you something else to look at in your quest.

Regards,
Chris Buchanan
