Listers of hope and wisdom,

I hope you can help.

We have recently upgraded, or moved could be a more appropriate term, to a product called Office 365. No idea how it differs to previous Office versions but since the change I am now unable to open Excel (xls or xlsx) files in MapInfo. There is a instant crash and and burn of MapInfo.

Has anyone had this behaviour before and more importantly got a fix? It's causing issues with a VB/MB application and I'd rather fix than rewrite to open in csv format.

Thanks Keith

Keith could you clarify what version of MI you're using?

I have been using Office 365 for 12 months with MI 8.5. No problems as you've described other than 8.5 doesn't support xlsx. Xls has been fine.

FYI there is actually no difference mechanically with 365 over the "box set" other than a requirement to phone home to MS once a fortnight to keep the license alive.

I would limit testing and debug to xls. It's known to be stable formany versions of MI. xlsx may introduce other unexpected variables.

Other testing is obtaining an xls sheet from an external source to see if the issue is file based or system based.

If system based perhaps a reinstall/repair of excel or MI in case a critical DLL has been clobbered.

Thanks for the reply!

I'm using version 12 of MapInfo and Office (v13).

I've done some testing, both before and after my post. I've tested XLS files and they seem okay but only if they are native, and haven't been saved to XLS format from XSLX format.

I guess I will just have to switch file types to CSV.

Thanks again,
Keith

I will drop by $0.02us, just don't throw it back at me.

MS Office is it worst own enemy by destroying files for no reason.

There is a resource to try before setting your hair on fire.
LibreOffice [www.libreoffice.org] which is a fork of OpenOffice.org [now part of Apache.org -the largest used webserver- & why the fork to LibreOffice] .

I dumped MS back on OO v0.6 [now 4.1.1] and never looked back and moved to LO when they started writing X files. [OO still does not write X files]

If your IT department does not throw a hissy fit, go get and install LO and open the file and save as Microsoft Excel 2005/2010/2013 XMS (.xlsx) (*.xlsx) with a new name.
The default when installed is ODF Spreadsheet (.ods) (*.ods).
No love lost on the save format, MS works with OD* files and you have to pick that on every save, while  LO options allow you to pick any defaut format for saving.

If using LO is not an option, you can send me the file and I will send back a new file, if it works then that should be enough to have LO installed.
I can not test the files as I only have MapInfo prior to v8.5 [xls only]

Almost forgot, LibreOffice and OpenOffice are 100% FREE and also run on Linux and OSX.  Should it not recover/repair the file what have you lost.

Keith,
When you try the XLSX to XLS do you get any warnings about unsupported features?

If so, what are the features?

That dialog can be confusing. I'm never sure if I'm confirming "I know it doesn't support feature X" or "I don't want to lose that support for feature X"

BTW Trey's suggestion is another way to strip out the features that may be causing issues. You may find a formula or something in the sheet is causing a problem.

This is similar to your csv idea.

Another thought, are you checking the option to "Create a copy in Mapinfo format for read\write?"
