I have run into a problem with my data set that I hope can be easily solved.
My study uses grid cells and point data. Each point has a latitude and longitude coordinate, these have been uploaded to mapinfo and then this information has been put into a grid cell data set. However, some points are located on the border between two grid cells. Any information from points on
a border between two grid cells has been put the dataset, where the information for each grid cell has been duplicated. This is inaccurate for my study. Is there any way to get mapinfo to just put the data into one grid, ideally the grid that the highest proportion of the event is located in.
Although, it is also possible (and should in theory be the case) that the borders between the grid cells are too sharp and the points shouldn't be classified as being in two grids. I may need to
define each grid in a way to avoid this problem. However I am unsure on how to do this.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Kind regards Duncan
I can now explain the problem more accurately.
An example is that one of the grid cells (say grid A1) border is bounded between -13.3 and -13.2 degrees longitude. Directly right of grid cell A1 is grid cell A2 which is bounded between -13.2 and -13.1 degrees longitude. The point event has a longitude value of -13.2. It is therefore classed as being in grid cell A1 and A2 in the data set.
To overcome this problem I would need define the left border of grid A2 as belonging from -13.2 where as the right border of A1 would be up to -13.2, whereby the point would be classed as being in grid cell A2 only.
Is this possible in Mapinfo?
What if you add a column to the point table and update this with the grid cell reference. This will only grab one cell reference even if the point falls on the border of two cells. Then use this cell reference as the join when updating the grid table, instead of using WITHIN.
