Hello,

I am sure this question has been ask before, but I am not able to find
any info about it.

I did a thematic map with MapInfo and I'd like to bring the thematic
on Google Earth, is there a way to store the colors from thematic map
in the Tab file (am talking about large-complicated files- out of the
question manual work - may be mapbasic)? So I can have a nice,
colorful map on Google?

Thank you,

You will need to use the hard code thematic MBX which is available in
MapInfo Tool Manager.
You can then send the thematic to GE.
Be aware though that the layer will be opaque but you can change the
opacity in GE properties.
I have been sending thematics to GE but I just use coloured boundaries
instead of a filled polygon and get the same result but with the ability
to see detail on the ground. I also extend the boundary to the ground so
that I get a "picket fence" effect which enables my clients to see the
different coloured boundaries according to the ranges.
You may also need to send the legend as a separate layer so that your
users can see what ranges refer to what colours.
Hope this helps.

The program is very good for what was design - drive test.
Unfortunately, I'd like to use for polygons(county boundary) not
points. Thank you very much any way.

Thanks for the pimping my script Bill.
The script does not come standard with MapInfo Pro.
You will need to download it from the DirectionMag resources area.

Doru: I have also just sent you the updated version that handles the way MapInfo saves the newer thematic templates.
You will need the STR file that comes with the older version.
Please respond with feedback as to how it performed for you.

Wooo back to using MapInfo again =)

Hi Just use the Google Earth Link to export the thematic. Mapinfo will save two files one KML and one JPG. Now open the jpg in Photoshop and remove the white background in Photoshop and save in PNG format (if you will save in JPG it will not work). Once save in PNG format change the .png extension back to .jpg and open it in google earth...whoola there is no white background now set the transparency by right click properties. Enjoy :)

Great to see you back in the MapInfo world Stephen!

Just a follow on to Bill and others reply.

I have been creating translucent polygons in Google Earth (for display in My Google maps in fact) by exporting the Hard Code thematic layer polygons via the Google Earth Link tool.

This creates a KML file which I then open in notepad and search for the text "outline><color>FF" which I then replace with "outline><color>C4"  (FF is 100% in hexadecimal code = 256; whilst C4 is less than 100%  = 196) This creates a polygon which is about 75% opaque so you can see the detail from the underlying raster layer.

If you also add the value from the thematicised field when you create the KML file then your users can click on the polygon and Google Earth will display the boundary outline plus an information window with the value from that field.

This is providing me with an interactive display of demographic mapping for one of my clients who were managing with static layered PDF products until now!

Ge shows points but it don't shows the same colours as in the mapinfo
We need the exact same colour points as in mapinfo
We have different legends that we need to be displayed on the google earth and GE don't do it

A cross-hairs has appeared on my screen showing exact location of the curser. How do I turn this off?
