Hello all,

It's been very frustrating trying to export to vector out of MapInfo.
ESRI has a simple "export to eps" option. I could only dream that
MapInfo would have such a feature. I hope developers look into
this....

Does anyone have any tips or tricks they can share? I have tried many
options like saving as emf, different print drivers, various mbx's
with no luck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi J

MapInfo can print to eps too.  You need to look at the settings on your postscript print and under Postscript Options > Postscript Output Option > select Encapsulated Postscript (eps).

Then just print normally and you will get your eps file.

Doesn't that depend upon the printer you have installed?
I can't seem to find any Postscript Properties......

What version of MI are you using and what printer ?

Hi Sheila,

Thanks for the response. I have tried that option but I am not happy
with the result. The file always comes in the opposite direction it
should be and the data comes in bad. Maybe it's the data I am using
to begin with?

I am looking for something that will import the correct data at the
right size, shape, etc. I found an mbx a while ago that did a
fantastic job but it doesn't work anymore and I can't get a hold of
the devloper.

Another option is to use Ghostscript and Redmon to create a PS (or
EPS). This creates a virtual PS printer for your machine if you do not
have a PS printer. However the results are not very good (the quality
is suppose to be 300 dpi/even tried 600 dpi howvever are more closer
to about 96 dpi).

The export to map feature in ArcGIS produces a high quality product
(and if you then convert it to a PDF the file is still of high quality
and about one tenth the size of a PDF file created straight from
MapInfo or ArcGIS). Surely MapInfo can have a similar tool??

Creating PDF's and PS maps from MapInfo is still very annoying
(haven't got 9.5 on my machine yet ... maybe they have addressed
this??). Having to install third party tools or print devices is
really not good enough. The word MAP is entrenched in the MapInfo
brand name yet creating a simple map export product is so hard ...
doesn't make much sense too me (and considering ArcView 3.2 was able
to export to so many formats and that is 10 years old).

Hi J

It sounds like you may need to update your printer driver.  I have used this method in the past and the eps file generated hasn't been corrupted in any way.

Good luck

Hi Sheila

I have had almost the same experience, that I can't make eps files
from mapinfo, and I tried hard!
We have a single licen to arcgis, and I use that for making eps files
now!
But it is quite annoying to transform data from mapinfo to shape, just
for making an eps file.

so I would like to know what driver you are using with mapinfo?

The printer driver will depend on which printer you have installed on your PC/laptop.

I've not used the generic one in the past but specific for either Canon or HP.

Hi LarsC

I have had this problem just now. Did you find any solution about converting mapinfo to EPS?
I have the mapinfo v11 but without discovery. Although, I have not ARCGIS and can not making EPS.
I want to keep high quality of my vector map for Journal. They only accepts EPS as vector file.
Other format options, can not require their acceptance.
Please respond me, as soon as possible, if you any suggestion.

Regards Onon G.

Does the content behind this knowledge-base description not work for you?

It's the top hit on search string: mapinfo print to eps.

Your letter sounds urgent, so may I inquire?--will the journal accept a tif image?  That's been my experience in the Earth sciences.  Most journals will accept high-resolution tif images (bitmaps).  300 or 400 dpi.  Not a vector format, but it may still be an acceptable format for publication, especially if they don't make modifications to illustrations during their work flow.

The last of the several(?) alternatives is to export window to wmf or emf format, then open that file in Illustrator (for example).  If the map isn't too complex, then you can literally reassemble it in Illustrator (add your fills, modify line weights or line styles), and make a nice finished product.  This method quickly becomes tedious with complex maps.

If you have a graphics package such as Illustrator or Corel Draw, save your mapinfo file as a .pdf and open it with your graphics package of choice.  Once there you can add any additional graphics you need. When you are finished, save it as an .eps file, and you are good to go.

Word of caution, fonts can be an issue, so make sure to embed them.

Hope this helps

Best Regards,

Barbara Carroll, CPG
