Hi,
just stumbled across some info regarding Microsoft decommissioning BING Maps and replacing it with AZURE Maps. Just wondering the implications for BING imagery that is included with MI licences?
Thx Peter

Hey Peter

This is something we are investigating.

What’s your take on it?

Should we continue with Bing/Azure or is the an vendor that would be better?

We are open for suggestions 😊

Peter

Hi Peter,
My 2 cents worth......
I do have a "backup" for satellite imagery coverage provided by Queensland government, but that only covers the state of Queensland, which covers me for 95% of my work. Occasionally I do need coverage outside of the Queensland/Australian borders. However, some of these Qld Govt (WMS,WFS, etc) services are unfortunately becoming ESRI centric and are not compatible with MI.
I guess for Preciously/MAPINFO, an international company, it would be essential to have a global coverage for satellite imagery, whether it be BING or AZURE and it certainly doesn't appear to be problematic to switch to AZURE maps, as this (smallish) 3rd party vendor has. (See email extract below). I suppose the other major player to consider in delivering global imagery is Google. Not sure if there are major differences in AZURE vs GOOGLE imagery, but things I would be considering would be currency of imagery and resolution limits and of course cost.

EMAIL EXTRACT

We’re pleased to inform you that changes in BING Maps to Azure Maps as layers in SWIFT are now available!

This latest version includes :

  • A new Azure Maps base layer providing enhanced performance and clarity
  • Improved compatibility with modern mapping standard
  • Seamless transition with no user configuration required
Why the change?
Microsoft has officially decommissioned Bing Maps, replacing it with Azure Maps as their supported mapping service. To maintain platform compatibility and performance, we’ve proactively made this change within SWIFT

Thanks
Peter H

Does anyone know if Google allows open access to their satellite imagery without fees?
I see that a QGIS plugin called AusMap has Google Satellite access, among other Australian-related data layers.
I have used this for New Zealand. The resolution is quite good, but not quite the maximum available.

Hi (again),

Something like openstreetmap would be a nice addition. Not satellite but detailed useful mapping background

Hi,

You can find OSM_Roads.TAB in the tileserver folder in MapInfo.
It has been there for at least 10 years.
