Has anybody actually seen or tried the new MI version? Does it have better database connectivity?

Nowhere do I read that it features multi-monitor support, any insider knowledge on this also?

Hello everyone:

I usually print my maps to Adobe Acrobat format for clients and to archive my work for future reference.

When I use patterns other than solid, I find that the lines and points thicken considerably from what they look on screen or on paper prints.

In pdf, the dots and lines become quite coarse, and I often have to resort to different patterns on paper and in pdf files.

I have noticed this in MapInfo 6, then 8 and now 8.5, and also in Acrobat 6 and now 8. Vectors are shown in correct line thickness.

I realize that it’s because patterns are rasters but that is also how they are represented on paper.

Has anyone run into this problem and is there a setting in either MapInfo or in Acrobat to make patterns as thinner dots and line?

Thanks in advance for any suggestion to fix this.

Best regards,

Daniel Beauchamp, P.Geol.

Well, you are correct that you can only sharpen the points and other objects so far, the big difference is made from within Adobe.

Now I'm running the older version 5, but I'm sure this would be a similar solution in the newer 7 or 8 versons (I'm referring to Acrobat itself, surely the free Acrobat Reader has the same functionality).

Anyway, in v5.5 and from the menu bar, I click on "Edit" "Preferences" "General" and under "Display" and under "Smoothing", check the box or boxes you wish to apply smoothing to.  "Smooth Line Art" dramatically enhances lines printed from Mapinfo.

Well, would anyone in Seattle care to share what they've seen and heard about MI Pro 9.0? Surely, there must be somebody monitoring this list who knows something.
I'd really like to know what they mean by "enhanced database support" and "direct access to new geographic or infrastructure data formats".

I hope that PB MapInfo would do a better job in the future of keeping their www.mipro.com website updated, especially when their press release directs customers there for more info about version 9.0.

The only thing I am expecting from 9.0 is incorporating of the main projection used in Slovakia and Czech Republic called Krovak, as was promised by somebody from MapInfo last year. We are waiting since version 4.0…

Well, here's the news from MapWorld in Seattle with regards to Pro v9.0, due for release in June (2007, before the sceptical jokes start).

The two major feature improvements presented yesterday were:

- "Open Universal Data...". A new menu option under "File>", this feature allows you to open a number of spatial file formats (read only) using an underlying FME engine from Safe Software. The "gallery" of format is extendable with some needing external licence arrangements. e.g. ESRI Geodatabase.

- Curved labels. At last! Beautifully street labelling is finally here. It looks really nice and is pretty fast.

There are lots of other things too (e.g. layout window improvements) but my attention has been on these two as they are very significant.

I'll mention to Moshe that many people here on the -L would like a product update. Maybe he can post a quick summary of what's to come, especially as we are so close to release anyway.

The following are included in this release:

Czech Republic and Slovakia JTSK Projection
Bosnia-Herzegovina Coordinate Systems

Highlights of the "data enhancements" includes direct file open access to:

ESRI Shape including 3D shape files with Z and M values, E00, GeoDatabase (MDB), and SDE
The latest versions of CAD formats including DWG, DXF, DGN

The web page with details on the release is targeted to be live on May 16.  I'll post the url once it's live.

Definitely exciting news.
How about the beta cycle for v9?
It should be well under way, but I haven't seen any mention of this on the usual venues.

Hosanna! JTSK is actualy a coordinate system based on Krovak projection.

By the way, support for SDE means that Mapinfo can access geographic
databases managed with ArcSDE?
Thank for the good news.

Hi David:

Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, that was already checked on my version.

Playing around with the resolution on Acrobat I have determined that fewer lines are produced in a pattern if the resolution is set lower.

I had it at 1200 dpi and have tried 300 dpi, resulting in fewer, but still thick lines.

I will try to work on it and adjust a few more features of Acrobat.

Best regards,

Daniel Beauchamp, P.Geol.

I just asked at the Safe Software booth...

As standard, PostGIS is not supported, but if the PC also has FME installed, then the gallery of formats available to Pro v9.0 opens up to it's full range of formats, which does include PostGIS.

I am happy to be able to announce the major and some minor feature additions for Professional 9.0.
  • FME integration via Open Universal Data as stated. Out of the box, all the existing Universal Translator formats are supported as well as ArcSDE and ESRI Geodatabase. MapInfo cannot distribute the client DLLs for SDE and they must be the 9.2 version required by Safe Software. These are part of the ESRI ArcObjects install or can be downloaded via one of the ESRI Explorers. Exact download information will be included in the documentation. Purchasing the full Safe Software 2007 package from Safe Software will allow the end user to share the access to the full suite of format supported in the Safe package.
  • Curved labels for linear geometries. Manual location overrides are available via the label tool but not simple dragging. Text objects, as stored in a MapInfo table do not support the curved options. As stated, the do look good. Better labeling is something that we are committed to keep improving.
  • Date/Time and Time fields for any temporal data uses including support on all writeable formats (ODBC, OCI, Native) and reading from read-only formats. A full compliment of access functions of time parts and support for SQL searching is included. Full MapBasic support is included. I believe this will inspire many new types of applications and I expect we will do more in this arena.
  • Use of Query/Find and Geocode on any columns including ones that are not indexed. This includes Remote database tables as well as local files. Indices are generated on the fly as is done for thematics.
  • Multiple Hot Link columns per tables. This was requested right here on the "L".
  • "Save Window as" supports Geotiff creation.
  • Layout template support for creating and printing repeated layouts.
  • Improved support for Swedish and Danish sorting and removal of internal character set conversion tables in favor of full Windows Support. The latter means that data read from sources there the data is stored in non-Windows character sets (generally ISO character sets) will have much higher fidelity. We have seen this consistently in ESRI shape files which are often encoded in ISO character sets.
  • Krovak projection support.
  • Options to control the paste and find selection behavior as discussed here last fall.
  • Visible display of EPSG codes in the Coordsys dialog.
  • Software licensing options including nodelocked, concurrent and concurrent with borrowing capabilities.

Hooray - this I have been waiting for, for years now. I have never understood why us Scandinavians needed that special treatment in Mapinfo.
Does this mean that the Universal Translator now will be able to convert even swedish indexed tab files? We haven't been able to do that for some years, because of bad communication between Safe Software and MapInfo.

Eric, please send me a v9 beta and I promise to test this right away.

The backside is that we probably will need to rebuild all indexes again (the third or fourth time in the last ten years) but this may be the last time so I can live with that.

Actually the indexing issue was fixed a while back, both in MapInfo and in FME.

And I for one thinks that localized sorting is an essential feature. A != Æ != Å

The original problem was that the MFAL library regarded non American indexing as an error.

That's why MapInfo threw an error message when such was encountered. MapInfo changed the behaviour, enabling some sort of auto-reindexing, but not smartly so.

FME originally used MFAL, but not anymore, as far as I know, so no worries there.

But until full support for Unicode is introduced, character set issues will remain with us. Just using utf-8 would be an improvement.

I curious to see if MapInfo gets it right this time ...
