I am currently working as a consultant for a project in PNG. The usrs
here have ver 8.5. The version running on my laptop is 10. I have been
creating a few new version 10 files but they will not open in 8.5. Is
there a way round this or will they have to upgrade to version 10?

Hi,

you could try to change the second line in the TAB file.

It should say something like, !version X (where X is the version
number). You should also be aware that there have been som changes to
the TAB format (well, at least one major change). Since version 9
there has been two new datatype, datetime and time which is not
compatible with versions before 9. You should change them before
importing them into MI 8.5.

(I´ve also noticed some issues if you have a indexed table. Try to
remove that if you have problems with that).

Hi,

Is it TAB files or workspaces that won't open in version 8.5?

I'm having to support users operating with a variety of MI versions. I
have found that later versions are backwards-compatible but not the
other way. However providing the additional new functions are required
it is usually possible to work around this. e.g.

- Tab files created or modified in later versions will work in earlier
versions provided the newer data types are avoided.

- Workspaces created in later versions will work in earlier versions
provided the Version statement in the header is changed to a lower
number with a text editor.

- MapBasic programs created in later versions will work in earlier
versions provided the version in the header is changed to a lower
number with a Hex editor. I avoid this last procedure by using a
version of the MB compiler equivalent to the earliest MI version in
use.

Sorry, that should have read,

Thanks for all your help.

I think I may have had a brainwave, odd, but it has been known to
happen to me occasionally. What if, while i was in version 10 I were
to translate the files to shape files. Then, using version 8.5
translate the shape file back into TAB format, do you think this might
work?

It might be better to export the MapInfo 10 tab or layer to MIF & MID which are text files. Text files zip well so email of data to the end user may be an option. At the top of the MIF you will see a line like "Version 600". As long as the number is less than 850 you should be able to import the MIF & MID data into Mapinfo 8.5 with the same MapInfo styles. If the MIF file is showing a version number greater than 850, I suspect you need to use styles on your MapInfo 10 objects that were MapInfo 8.5 compatible & export to MIF & MID again.

I suspect using shape format to move data between versions of MapInfo the style information will be lost.

Surely if he changes the styles to make the mif/mid compatible with version 8.5 then the TAB files will be compatible too....

Anybody know what style information could be causing MI to save the tables as ver 10 ?

It could be that you have Date/Time fields in your table. Change these
to be Date fields instead and 8.5 should accept the table.

Alternatively you could use 8.5 to do the work as then you know the
client will be able to use it.

Try opening the MI 10  ".TAB" file in a text editor and change the version line to "!version 700" and save.
Hopefully it would work for 8.5 and 10 or even 7 version
I have done this occassionally but not on MapInfo10.
Let us know....
