Hi, is it possible to use google and bing maps as background maps on
desktop app?
If so where could I get any examples?

Is it true Google is an option? We have the premiere business API
where I work; however, they explicitly state that it is against the
TOS to directly call their tile server to display maps (like MapInfo
Pro does with Bing).

If you have figured out a way to do this with Google, can you please
share the steps behind it, I would be curious as well!

Have a good day.

Chris,

Due to Google's TOC, the only way I could get this to work within a reasonable financial solution was to embed a hidden web browser control wtihin my client side application.  When I press the "Satellite" button, I would position and make visible the web browser control over top of my MapInfo map control, and then invoke JavaScript on the web page to sync the center (lat/long & zoom level) of the MapInfo map to Google's map.

The invoking of the JavaScript allows for me to not have change the URL each flip my CSR does between MapInfo and Google's map controls.  It took a while to perfect it; however, it is working nicely now.

If you have any other solutions, I'd love to hear about them when you have time.

I also need to embed the Google map as background in MapXtreme .NET. Can you give me some more detials how I achieve this?

Thomas,

I never found any other way to resolve the issue into one hybrid type map. The only way I could see it working at this point would be to have a WMS service tiling your own maps with transparency at the base level to let the Google Satellite maps bleed through.

You would have to call the MapXtreme WMS service through the Google Maps API. I have not yet tried this; however, it appears to me the only way to make this work at this time.

If anyone else has examples, or sample code, please do share as we would love some pointers :)

Thanks,
Nick

If Google’s TOC makes it difficult, have you considered an alternative to google maps?

Maybe openstreetmap?

Management wants Google; therefore, no other option.  For now, my solution has satisfied everyone though and actually works really well because it allows for all of the Google Maps native drawing tools to be used.

I will probably work towards building a WMS service with MapXtreme to serve up some transparent layers (if possible when I get free time) to make one integrated map, instead of switching between 2 maps.

If you have any examples though, feel free to share.

Thanks,

An alternative to using the Google JavaScript API is OpenLayers http://openlayers.org/ Version 2 supports Google (along with virtually every other web map format). Not sure if Google is fully supported in version 3. I think OpenLayers meets Google terms by using the actual Google code within the OpenLayes API. If you develop in OpenLayes you're not bound to a single data source.
