does anyone know of a tool that would take polygons and split them in
half (so you end up with 2 polygons with equal area). Ideally i want
to take 1000's of building polygons and make a new layer that has each
building chopped in half.

i have access to MapInfo 10 and ArcView 10 (+ Spatial Analyst)

i've done a fairly big search online and seen this question asked a
couple of times but no definitive answers.

The only viable options i've found so far are:
- a script for ArcView 3.1 (which i don't have access to and can't be
bought)
- the ET GeoTools extension for ArcView (the ETSplitPolygonByArea
tool) which does exactly what i want but you have to manually click to
split each individual polygon.

anyone got any ideas of how this might be achieved in MapInfo?

http://www.griddle-gidata-analysis.com/page2.htm has a download to partition
a table of regions into equal-sized polygons.
The mesh option set to 2x1 will split a region into 2 vertically, 1x2
horizontally.
At high latitudes, it becomes unreliable due to the approximate method used
by MI to calculate areas.

This question really puzzled me, because it doesn't seem to have all the
necessary information.

Split a region in half... There are an infinite number of paths through a
region that will accomplish that. Even if you go for just a straight line.

If these are building polygons, do you want the path of splitting to be
oriented perpendicular to the road frontage?

Does splitting along the X or Y axis accomplish anything at all?

for my application i just needed both halves to have equal areas, the angle of the split wasn't important.

Hi Jamie,
I have the same need as you did. I tried this link http://www.griddle-gidata-analysis.com/page2.htm, but I do not know which tool to use.
Could you please advise which one to use?

Thanks,

Look for subdivider.mbx, or go to MacTools.
