I have aerial photos in ecw format, registered for MapInfo.  I can open these on my desktop but not on my laptop. MapInfo gives me an error message"
"Raster engine was unable to recognise image file format.  Unable to open table ......."

I am running MapInfo 8.5 and WinXP and am not attempting to open the files from a workspace.

Each image has the the following files
.alg
.ecw
.ers
.eww
.tab

Tab files have the following information:

table

!charset WindowsLatin1
!Generated by MapImagery Version   7.000   (Mar 30 2006) http://www.mapimagery.com
!MapImagerySuperSamplingFactor: 8.000000

I'd be grateful for any answers and solutions

In order to open ER Mapper files (alg and ers) you need MapImagery. You can download it free from the web www.mapimagery.com

Pancho,
Many thanks for the quick reply.
I knew that MaiInfo opens ecw files without MapImagery.  However, in this case I did not realise that MapImagery needed to open the ecw image files - presumably because of the other accompanying files (alg ers and eww).  I assumed that because there is a TAB file  clicking that would open the image.  Obviously not so.

I've installed MapImagery and can open the files

Thanks again,
John Elliot

I have had the very same issue but reversed!

I can open .ecw images created by ER Mapper in Mapinfo V9 on my laptop (without Mapimagery) but I get the "Raster engine was unable to recognise image file format.  Unable to open table ......." on my desktop version of mapinfo V9.

I am not sure if I am getting this error because of the original installation settings of Mapinfo on my desktop

Or

a conflict of previous versions of Mapinfo on my desktop!

Can anyone enlighten me?????

Regards,

My solution has been to install MapImagery; I can now open the ecw files without any problems.

Thank you Tony and Pancho for your solutions.  Tony, I've downloaded your app "tabs from ecw images" and will give it a try also.

Hi John

I note the tab file refers to the .alg file. A quick change of .alg to .ecw using something like srchplus will fix this problem, or you can use the mbx given in "tabs from ecw images"
http://www..directionsmag.com/files/index.php/view/586 to rewrite the tab files completely. I should copy the "tab" files first in case it all goes wrong.
