Hi, I’m creating a kind of low budget syncronization tool from VB6. A basic window loads and after you press a start button I’d like it to run MapInfo behind the scenes(I don’t even want to see a map or anything mapinfo related on the window).

Looking at the MapBasic User Guide it is saying two options I can use 1. CreateObject(“MapInfo.Application”) or 2. CreateObject(“MapInfo.Runtime”).

What is the difference?

What would be best?

Can I run an mbx from these?

I 'think' that the application is Mapinfo and runtime is Proviewer. When the the list wakes up I'm sure you'll get a better answer.

Hi,

I think "Runtime" means exactly that. It is a different version of MapInfo Professional without any menus visible when you start it. You have to enable them on or add your own. I can't finf it on PBBI website, so maybe the product is gone.

Hi seems I have the choice of either one of them then. I believe it’s still available as it mentions the runtime in the version 10 patch.
Thanks!

Hayden,

Uffe is correct, they are two completely separate products and require separate installs. "MapInfo.Application" refers to mapinfow.exe whilst "MapInfo.Runtime" refers to mapinfor.exe. The Runtime version is a developer only tool, it's fully functional, but comes with all the menus and button bars turned off,  in two flavours "Read-only" and "Manipulator". In the past I've sold RunTimes in packs of 10 to developers of approved applications.

The CreateObject call will let you specify any string you want but will only work if the relevant exe is available.
