Adding MAPINFO USER and Schema to SQL server

Hi,

We currently have an inhouse SQL server DB that houses Views from an external DB. Our inhouse DB is about to be migrated to a new server (not really a problem), and the DB administrator is asking what the Password for the MAPINFO user is.  Now I have limited (nil) knowledge of DB administration, and the DB administrator has little (Nil) knowledge of MAPINFO.  I do know the MAPINFO user/schema is required to upload tables, create the map catalogue, etc. Been there and done that....

Couple of questions 

1. Does the MAPINFO user in the SQL server DB require a password? (I have never known one to be in existence). The current MAPINFO user/schema was added abt 12 years ago by a previous DB administrator who no longer works here.

2. If a Password is required and no one knows what it is, is it OK to remove/delete the existing MAPINO user/schema and readd it and create the new elusive password? The DB administrator has concerns that if he does this it may cause problems to MAPINFO (pretty sure it wouldn't) and the DB itself (no idea if it would)

Sorry if this is a bit gibberish, and probably only people with a level of knowledge across  DB administration and MAPINO could answer with some certainty. 

Note we are currently running parallel servers until some other issues are sorted Everything appears to be running fine with MAPINFO user having no password.

As far as I  remember: In SQL Server terms, MAPINFO is just a schema name (MAPINFO.<table>)
So you probably have another user(s) which owning tables in the schema MAPINFO.
Even if the schema name stays the same, object ownership and permissions can be altered.

thanks Nesh. I think the DB admin is being over cautious, which is not a bad thing. If I had rights to the DB I would make the change. Guess I'll just have to convince him.

Hi Peter,

You need Write or and read permission for every user who Need Mapinfo. We use gruop rights for this.
