Hello Folks of GIS world,

Does anyone know how to get an ESRI ADF file into MapInfo.

I am using the FILE-OPEN RASTER feature where the ADF format is represented and all I get is a large black rectangle with no underlying data.

On a page I read when I Googled, there was a mention of using VM but the open grid feature in VM needs a TAB file and some vector data to create a grid.

I need someone’s expertise as I don’t have any more ideas.

Thanks.

I don’t know anything directly and not a lot of grid tools (I have generally used vertical mapper in the past), but could it be that the grid is present, but simply all coloured black?

you could try:

1.       See if the info tool returns any sensible numbers on the grid

2.       Doing a thematic on it?

Robert.

Thanks.

Even when saving the file there is no background data at all.

Each directory on the disc consists of a number of .ADF files which I suspect contain the tables of background data and grid info but I have no way of viewing the contents or putting them into MapInfo in a readable format. There is also another directory which contains .001, .DAT and .NIT files which I must admit mean absolutely nothing to me.

A local government group member has suggested using FME and I am currently trawling the web to get an eval copy to test.

Thanks again

Bill,

Try the "grid image" option in files of type, it should display the raster as an image. To access the grid data though you need to convert the original grid to an ascii grid with a tool from arcgis then you can import it in VM.

Cheers

I found that you can also import the file from the menu Tools>Grid tools>Create Mapinfo grid from other grid file into a MIG file if you have MI 9.5.

Olivier

Thanks for the tip.

I have to admit I didn’t see that option. Seems I had eyes only for Raster types.

I will now try it out and see if it gives me something more meaningful that a black spot.

Yep. Getting spot heights and shapes now.

Thanks, mate.

If you fail with core MIPro and VM, you can try Engage add on that has
quite a lot of grid related tools also for import/export.
Bests,
Jakub
