As I'm planning to launch a GIS-based data product that has been six years in development, I tried to discover current MapInfo pricing.

What I seem to have found is essentially a pricing structure that is, an annual rental.  Am I mistaken or is this the only way that MapInfo is now distributed?  Is the same fee payable each year for the product to work or is that a maintenance charge that can be opted out of?

Thank you for any information on this.

Yes, as a subscription.
If you have an existing perpetual license, you can keep doing maintenance only or just keep using it without an annual cost.
It's been like this for a couple of years, I think.

Thank you Uffe,

I had hoped that was not the backward step I was seeing.  It reminds me of the days of dongles.  Users moved away from such products.  Best I improve my QGIS skills!

So to summarise - if I had bought Mapinfo, say 5 years ago and chosen no maintenance - the 5 year cost would have been around £2,000.  Now, in 5 years the cost will be £10,000.  I presume Precisely/PB has been gobbled up by an equity firm?

Mapinfo/Precisely, I was considering bundling an MI licence into a new data product release, sadly that is no longer a sensible or commercially viable option, if the pricing model is as described.

Kind regards

Ian

Hi,

A 1 year subscription is not the same price as a perpetual license without maintenance, so it is not as bad as you describe it. Far from that. Get the details from a reseller.

Maybe MapInfo ProViewer is good enough for your project?

Uffe

Ian,

Not as much as that as the annual fee for MapInfo Pro is just over £700. You now also get the Advanced Raster options within that. That is what was once Vertical Mapper.

I think Precisely still offer runtime licence options for things like your application – you would need to ask them.

Hi Tim

Thank you for taking the trouble to respond.  The runtime might be a useful option to consider, if still available.   However, whilst the pricing on subscription is less than the former one-off purchase, it is still quite a bit more expensive over the longer term.  Here's what Precisely advertise (supply through Digital River).

MI_Pricing.png
So, I make that £820 + VAT = £984 for MI Pro (My mapbase is of a fictitious place so no need for any third-party maps in Premium) .  The 3-year licensing is cheaper at £615 + VAT, so £738/annum.   Even on that basis it's effectively £3,690 for the theoretical 5-year period as above.  It would be nice to have the option, as previously, to decline the maintenance and pay a higher one-off fee.  I don't rent my car, house, furniture or IT.  I'd rather not rent my software but buy a new product if, and when, I need it.  If they throw in bespoke routing, I'll re-consider!

Tim, Uffe, thank you again for your responses.

Ian.

Hi John,

Thank you for the information.  I'm sure the subscription model is popular with vendors and perhaps re-sellers, less so the renter.  Reminds me of the bad old days of dongles.   I don't but could, do most of my Microsoft Excel work, on a 2003 version.  Perhaps some people want or occasionally need the latest version.  I prefer to pay more up front and decide when, and if, to change version.  Hey ho.

Back to my old firm... how about renting a cop for an hour, to report a burglary or assault.  A few more hours for an arrest, etc.  It would definitely raise the service level!   Yes, I know, we pay tax for that.

Peter and his colleague very kindly reached out to me and have put me in touch with a partner but thank you for your offer to supply...tenner a bit mean though ;-(

End of FY tomorrow, hope it's been a good year for you.

Kind regards

Ian.
