Hi, you're more likely to get a meaningful answer if you tell us the
following.

Which version of MapInfo and UT are you using?
What does the error message actually say?
What happens when you try to 'Save Copy As' ?

Gentreau.

Have you tried just opening the shape file thru File > Open, and here choosing the file type "ESRI Shape" ?
And as Gentreau wrote, a bit more details might help as well if you are looking for help

1.what type of geometry is the shaepfile (point, polyline, polygon,)?
2. have you simply tried file>open? most sheapfiles should open and display in mapinfo, you just can't edit them
3. the other option for translation is GDAL, open source. google fwtools for the command line implementaion, then google "ogr2ogr cheat sheet" for the quick translation explanation.

the other thought, have you tried opening the shapefles in Arc? version 9, try viewing the files in arccatalogue. a right click on the files, select properties and checking the coordinate system (.prj) file is correct. check the prieview tab to view the geographic extents/data, and the tabbular structure/data.  I'm not sure how to accomplish this in arc10

You should not use the UT facility but just open the shape file. Files >
open>select the file as a "shp" file and then create a tab.
