save legend frame as separate image

I use the layout window to create maps and legends. Sometimes clients want the legend separate from the map. To do that, I simply move the map window, make the page layout smaller and move the legend onto the 'white' space. However, I can't figure out how to get the legend to only print the the legend itself instead of the size of the 'white' space, unless I create a custom size. And custom sizes never save in the workspace. 

Is there a way to only print the area within the legend frame?
