Hi all,
Could anyone give me some advice about ecw files which already contain
geo-referencing information?

When these are opened by Mapinfo directly they appear to be to the
right scale, but in the wrong place - in fact, opening two (or more)
puts them right on top of one another.

In the past I've used Mapimagery which solved the problem neatly,
never any problems with it, ecw's would open just where they should in
relation to my other layers... then I upgraded to MI 10.5 - the latest
available download of Mapimagery just causes MI to crash on start up &
had to be uninstalled; the older version doesn't work!

Anyone else had this & care to share a solution? BTW I know I could
manually reference the ecw file, but I've got too many of these for it
to be viable!

many thanks,
Rob.

You might try tabs from ecw images under directionsmag. This will create a tab file and with the correct projection for each ecw image in a dos created list. If you are dealing with very large images or need high precision in geographic coordinates, contact me amd I will ship a subsequent version of the mbx.

To anyone at PBBI - can MapInfo read an ers file or correctly read the ecw header and place a georeferenced ecw correctly without the need of a third party plug in that as mentioned by Rob causes crashes?

It would be a great thing for someone to work on and include in a patch.

Hi James,

I just did.
I selected a ECW file (that also has a EWW file) thru the Open dialog.
I was asked to select the projection for this ECW which I did.
MI Pro then created the tab file placing the ECW in the right location.

My EWW looks like this:
0.125
0.0
0.0
-0.125
524000.0625
6153999.9375

And the created tab file:
!table
!version 300
!charset WindowsLatin1

Definition Table
  File "test.ecw"
  Type "RASTER"
  (524000,6154000) (0,0) Label "Pt 1",
  (533999.875,6154000) (79999,0) Label "Pt 2",
  (524000,6144000.125) (0,79999) Label "Pt 3"
  CoordSys Earth Projection 8, 115, "m", 9, 0, 0.9996, 500000, 0
  Units "m"

I do not have en ERS file in the same folder, but I can't see why that should matter.

If your ECW files are placed on top of each other, it sounds as if the EWW files are the same/contain the same geo-location information.
Could you check this?

Many thanks Tony - looks like you're the author of that plugin! -
exactly what I needed, worked perfectly, much appreciated.

A suggestion (plea?) from the less command-line-literate: would it be
possible to adapt the mbx, or create a separate little program, to
generate the list file? Reason is I train (occasionally) a disparate
group of self-employed / small-business-type foresters on basic use of
Mapinfo. (Aerials received as ecw are essential to this)... I think
command line stuff is a step too far for some people, the GUI is
apparently frightening enough! They were fine with Mapimagery - while
it worked - but I'm worried that those with MI update contracts will
soon find themselves unable to use it, as I was.

That's just a thought anyway - no idea how difficult it would be, or
if it's in anyone's interest to do it! Many thanks for your help.

Rob.
