Here is a question for you all:

If you have a road represented as a long narrow polygon is there a way that this can be converted into just a centre line? This is because the user wants to be able to apply appropriate road line styles (e.g. motorway) and you can’t do that when the object is a polygon.

Thanks in advance

Tim

Tim,

To simply convert a polyGON to a polyLINE, you can simply select the object(s), pull down menu [Objects] (or right click depending on your setup) and select "Convert to polylines".  There's still clean up left to do as you'll probably have way more polyline than necessary, also, the beginning and end nodes of the product will vary and may show up randomly within the part of the polyline you wish to maintain.

IF your given polygon represents say, the surface area of a given "road", where you need to "split the difference" or split equally in two to create a centerline, that would require some trickery and work around manipulation (using the create boundary tool) or call for a tool found in a much later version of MI than I have that can split this polygon as you desire (Mapcad is it called?).

This may help to recover the centre-line from a simple buffer.

Select all " Right click" convert to polyline.....

Hello,

http://www.spatialprojects.com.au/spatialsql_median.htm

Don’t know if it still functions with current MapInfo versions, but it will produce median lines between MapInfo objects and inside polygons.

Regards,

Phil Waight.
