Hi,

Is there a way of saving a thematic layer as a tab file so that it can
be opened again in a separate session displaying the colours used on
the thematic map?

I'm trying to create what in ArcMap would be a "Layer File". Is there
an equivalent function in MapInfo to update a table with predefined
colours. My question is in the context of OS MasterMap which, when we
translate it using FME displays as plain white. We want the standard
MasterMap colours to display instead.

Any ideas?

Thanks

HI Sarah,
  yea
  1. make your layer editable
  2. use sql select to select the objects that are to be displayed the same
  3. select Options - then point/line/regions style and set the display how you want
  4. save the file
  5. repeat selection for next theme

Thanks Greg.

The problem is that I want to set up an automated process so that the
region styles can be updated quickly and easily in different topo_area
tables. I don't want to have to go through the selection process each
time as there are so many different display styles in MasterMap.

Hi Sarah!

The closest equivalent in MapInfo would be a workspace file which
stores the thematic settings.
This does not alter the original appearance of the objects which
Greg's suggestion would.
I do not know if this is what you want.
May I point out that MapInfo and ESRI map files differ in that the
shape file format does not carry graphical attributes, only geometry
and tabular attributes. The layer (lyr) file is designed to overcome
that flaw and carries predefined graphical attributes for the shape
file. There is no direct equivalent in the MapInfo world.
However, a lyr file can act only on one shapefile in the same folder,
while many workspaces can access the same tab file, each with
different display settings.

As for the option to stamp the thematic settings into the tab file
permanently, lots of work has been done to create utilities for this.
I am sure a search in this lists archive will prove useful.

Regards, Mats.E

Sarah,

MapInfo v8.5 added a new feature where you could associate a thematic
layer as a 'theme' to a table, so whenever the table is opened the theme
is displayed. You need to enable the 'Automatically Open Default Theme'
option under Map Window Preferences (Options -> Preferences). Then,
when you create your thematic map you just need to enable the 'Associate
Theme with Table' option in step 3 and this 'theme' will then be applied
every time the table is opened (only works for MI v8.5 onwards though).

The other option would be to create your thematic map and then use the
'Hardcode thematic' tool to apply the styles to the actual map objects
themselves. I think this tool ships with MI but if you don't have it
you can download it here -
http://www.directionsmag.com/files/index.php/view/675 .

I guess the other option would be to save the thematic layers as a
workspace, so you just need to open the workspace rather than individual
tables, though this has a drawback if the map window is already set-up.

Hello Sarah

I'm not familiar with FME - but does it not allow you to apply styles at the
time of translation? One alternative could be to use a different
translator - we use BY Design MapGML which allows us to set up a "style
file" to colour the map objects exactly how we like ( we have slightly toned
down some of the brighter MasterMap colouring!) it also allows us to split
MasterMap into as many separate layers as we like (essential for
zoom-layering). It's very quick too.

Sue

Sarah,

As many people on this list know, I would recommend the automatic theme option. From what you have stated, it sounds exactly what you need.

There were some other comments about TAB file and differences from an ESRI Lyr file. I would claim that with many of the additions that we have added to TAB in recent years, a TAB with metadata is much more like a Lyr file! There are settings for themes, legends, hotlinks and browser view options.

Hello All

I have recently come accross the same issue as Sarah, in that I want
to automate the process of converting thematic map styles to region
styles without the lengthy selection then modify region style process.
I am also working with Master Map data.

The 'Hardcode Thematic' tool appears to be a good solution to this,
which I downloaded from the link provided. However I have tried to run
this application to produce a new table with the region styles of a
thematic map without much success. I recieve the two error messages
below.

RtnStyleInfo
Dstr_Code:Brush (216752800, 16777215)
Mid $ (Dstr_Code, 0, 28):
(hct v0.94.mb:576) InStr:argument 1 out of range
Error Code:644

Process Thematic: Run Command Set Style Brush
Found [] while searching for [A string constant]
Error Code:615

A new table is produced but the region styles are unfortunately
unchanged.

Does anybody have any ideas/hints as to where I am going wrong. Any
help would be much appreciated.

Rob

Uhhh yea....
that was an issue since MapInfo 8.5 due to inconsistent way MapInfo Pro handled saving the metadata of clone window / workpsace file.
I have an updated version which I never bothered to upload.
I guess I'll look back into the archives

Apologies doubly as I have not checked in with the forums for such a long time now.
It's a crazy world that we live in now that I have nothing whatsoever to do with MapInfo =)
Let me know if you are still interested and I'll email it to you directly

Hi Steve

I got round the problem by using the hardcode mbx only on certain region styles (not pastel) as pointed out by another poster. This worked for the project I was dealing with. If it is no problem for you, a copy of the updated tool would be great.

Sorry to hear that you are not working with MapInfo any more and only check on the forums every so often. Us beginners need as much help as we can get!

Cheers

Sorry to bring an old thread up.
Not quite a year ago but hey at least I remembered and I care =P
Or at the very least I pretend to.

Been getting a few random requests from someone at MapInfo who wanted it.
So I thought I'd do another quick search.... and guess what....
I just found the updated mbx for Hardcode Thematics @ v0.97b   (b for Beta)
Have not found source code, so I have NFI what the updated version does.
However, I think the changes made fixed the pastel thematic template issue.

I did a quick test on several thematics based on pastel template and it worked fine.
Anyone else interested in giving it a go?
Or should I just blindly upload / update Directions?
It's designated a Beta because the guy I made the code changes for never replied with how he went, and I forgot all about it.
Sooo... I guess, if you want to volunteer, please let me know how you go so that I may upload it for all at a later date.

Hi
I created a thematic map where you use two tables, but the issue will not let me link it to the table,
could you tell me why?.. thanks

Upload? Nope.
Where's the best place for me to do that these days?

Hi Steve,

Did you ever upload the updated version anywhere?

I've just ran into this pastel problem.
