I want to put an interactive google map on our website that will allow
people to put in their information and flag themselves on the map. I
would also like to be able to choose the information categories they
fill in. Can I do these things and what would be the best plan of
attack for doing so?

I don't think this will address his problem. What he needs is a map on
his website *and* allow users to add specific kinds of entries on the
map.

Try ZeeMaps at http://www.zeemaps.com. You can create a map and
publish it in your website. While generating the code for publishing,
you can ask it to create an "Add" button for your map. Then copy and
paste a few lines of HTML to your web page and you should have a map
that your users can add entries to.

There are a number of other customizations that you can do, e.g.,
restrict entries to belong to certain categories (distinguished by
colors), and so forth.

Let me know if I can provide additional information.
