Any ideas on where I could find freely available college campus
footprint data? I'm looking for building footprints but also the
footprints of the campuses. I noticed that the basic google maps
layer has most college campuses shaded in grey and I'm wondering if
they got those layers from a publicly available source. If you know
where they got this (whether it was bought from someone like TeleAtlas
or another company, or whether there is a free repository for this
data somewhere) I'd appreciate a helping hand.

Thanks.

I think you can get such data through the US Govt's Tiger database,
although I can't say for sure.

There may be 2 sources that can help you. Many states and some
counties and cities have mapping data layers available to the general
public, free of charge. Do some searches for GIS data. Start out
local and then work up to state level. 2 Missouri sites that you can
use for comparison to other states are http://msdis.missouri.edu and
http://cares.missour.edu. some local communities have there own data
portals. San Diego has their hppt://www.sangis.org.
