Can anyone explain how are road names processed, depending on the name
type? I'm interested in a detailed explanation on which road name goes
where (my understanding is that numbered highway name is used by Maps
for the road number icon, while preferred name is used by MapMaker to
be rendered along the road).

Do we have to enter both for a road to get both apps working?

Furthermore, does the order matter?

To give an example, I've created roads with only numbered highway
name. The name does not appear in MapMaker. I've added a second
preferred name (using the same name) - the name still doesn't show up.
Does Preferred have to be the first - and if so, will Maps still show
the road icon?

You might want to add the link for the road. Preferred is usually the one that shows up on the map. But the link would help understand why it is not showing up.

Road DJ679 has both Numbered highway and Preferred as Name (in this
order). However, the map doesn't show it.

Additional info after I ran some experiments with different naming
schemes:

Some smart-ass thinks that the name of numbered highways must always
be a number. Well surprise-surprise, for a good deal of countries, it
also contains letters!
To be more specific, naming a road with a Numbered highway name shows
the "icon" ONLY if the name is actually a number. No letters, spaces
or anything else allowed. Check out this link:
http://www.google.com/mapmaker?ll=44.273967,24.955101&spn=0.086038,0.218353&z=13

- Road DJ701 has "701" as numbered highway name and DJ701 as preferred
name. It shows up correctly on the map, with both names (the preferred
one shown along the road, while the numbered highway name shown in a
box along the route).
- Road DJ612B has "612B" as numbered highway name and DJ612B as
preferred name. It shows up only the preferred name - the numbered
highway box is gone.

Conclusion for me is that only numbers are accepted there; this is a
bug, since numbering schemes for roads often contain one or two
letters. Think of Exx roads all over the Europe!

Another thing - using numbered highway with DJ701 as first name
(before the preferred name) will also hide the preferred name so that
the road remains nameless, even though two names for the same language
were entered. This is a second bug, which I suspect it might be
related to the first (someone validating the numbered highway name is
stopping the name processing due to the "invalid" name??).

Any feedback would be appreciated, especially on the corresponding
behavior of GoogleMaps which I cannot verify. Do they have the same
bug?

Note that the help recommends using numbered highway names where
appropriate - and so do the moderators; however, you need to make them
work properly before we commit to making such changes...

Hi Dan,

Thanks for posting this and apologies for the delay in response.
This does appear to be a bug. The examples you have posted are useful
for us to investigate the behavior here.

I will post an update back to this thread once we have more clarity on
why this is happening.

Thanks; as I mentioned in the post, it clearly works when the name is
a number and it clearly doesn't when the name contains letters
(anywhere in the name). So somebody assumed the numbered highway
should display only numbers, which may be true for US, but it
certainly is not for Europe...

Do consider fixing this, otherwise we will probably won't use numbered
highway for roads at all (given the added effort to enter two names,
with no results on the map).

Thanks,

It works for India and Pakistan though.. And also I see when data is
published to google maps then it doesn't make any difference whether
it was selected with Numbered Highway or as Preferred/Official. It's
only in map maker that it doesn't show as it is supposed to be..

Hmmm, I see some NHxx icons in India; however when I look at the road there's no numbered highway used anywhere; instead, it's Abbreviated name type that makes the difference.

Thanks Jabran, you've been of great help here.

If abbreviated name makes an icon appear, we can surely use that. Map Maker Guide, can you give your opinion whether we should use Abbreviated name to show the icon (instead of numbered highway) in countries where road numbers contain letters?

I believe it's doesn't matter while you are selecting the numbered highway or anything else. I assume perhaps google maps already learn from their existing data that which roads are numbered roads so it appears fine at google maps despite the format is not correct for all countries most times now. Examples are the Pakistan National Highway network appearing at google maps. I'm working on a major roads rework in Pakistan from last 2-3 months which also includes the correction of highway codes selected as numbered highway though I know it doesn't matter for data once published to google maps and it also make the highway look like unnammed in map maker at the places where it doesn't have any local alternative names. There are couple of issues already reported in issue tracker regarding errors with highways codes, you may wanna have a look at them and vote to the one appropriate for you. Cheers

I don't understand what to do with it, either. It would help to know
the exact rendering rules.

If I have a road whose only name is "E 70" (space intentional), am I
to add two names - one of type "Preferred" and the other of :"Numbered
Highway", or just the latter?

When there is both a name and a number (like "A-B Road" and "A 3"), do
I add "A-B road" with type "Preferred" and "A 3" of type "Numbered
Highway"?

Again, this all points to the fact that the wrong types of objects are
being used for names in the UI. I proposed, some time ago, what I
believed to be the correct model (search for sequel and Pakistan I
think), and Jabran followed up with some issues with the translation/
transliteration modeling. If someone wants to pick up the ball and
complete the proposal, we might be able to get it fixed. (I've not
enough time/motivation at the moment).

From my observation at Pakistan Highway and Motorway in current
Google Maps, it is compulsory to select their codes as numbered
highway so they will show up in proper designated badges. If you still
look at most highways in Pakistan, you will see code names visible as
simple names too among with forced badges/sign-age. Though at the
last map data push update they were not updated correctly at Map
Maker. I'm saying "forced" because all 3 types of major roads in PK
doesn't represent the correct signage as they are supposed to be using
user data input. Cheers

Jabran,

I have tried to use the road code (DJ701 for instance) as numbered
highway and instead of showing up an icon (in Map Maker), it just
prevents the Preferred name of being displayed, so all I get is a road
with no rendered name. Looking at your samples, it seems that in
Pakistan this problem is not present (or could it be that Official
names get rendered while Preferred ones not?). Which puzzles me, I
thought the app works the same everywhere...

Since Maps hasn't been updated since I started mapping, I have no way
to detect what icons are used and where; browsing through other
countries makes me think that Maps does support different icon sets
per country.

Anyways, I'm waiting for an answer from GMM or Jen, it's no point
guessing the behavior.

Rendering is not same in map maker and other applications. Yes, this
is correct that when only one name is added as numbered highway, it
doesn't show up and the road look like unnammed road. The example of
rendering I gave you was in Google Maps not map maker. When preferred
and official names are added then preferred definitely show up while
then official will also show up depending on the length of road if it
is long enough to accommodate two names. Another different rendering
example is two names setting as
English > Official
Urdu > Preferred
Will show up only preferred name on rendering and in directions. But
on Google Maps it shows both names together.
Or
English > Preffered
Urdu > Preferred
Will show up first preffered name in rendering and directions while
similar behaviour in GMaps.

Signage were requested (for PK by momers) to be updated to official
design as appear in road side information boards and so supposed to be
for other countries as well.

This all am not guessing, I'm telling experience of oberservation/
study. :)

Hi guys,
As acknowledged earlier, Numbered Highway when used alone does not
seem to render here. This has also been posted as Issue 343:
http://code.google.com/p/google-mapmaker/issues/detail?id=343

The bounding box that is seen on the highways in India, Pakistan,
Vietnam, etc. is automatically set by Map Maker when a number is
detected in the name. Again, this does not seem to be working in
Romania. We are investigating the cause and will let you know of any
updates.

For now, I would advise you to mark using 'Type of Name' as
"Preferred" and also add an alternate name using 'Numbered Highway'.

Thanks,
Map Maker Guide.

Map Maker Guide,

Thanks for answering. However, while you're investigating, can you
please let us know how name rules are applied during rendering? This
is the "bigger question" in this post. We need to know what are the
expected effects of each type of name, both in Maps and Map Maker, of
name orders and languages etc. If name rules are different for roads/
POIs, then we need to know these differences. Maybe a help page would
be a good idea, to keep this info visible for everyone.

I mean, your developers must have had a functional spec of how each
name is rendered and where. We need that spec in a "user-friendly"
text. It's hard enough to get users to enter data consistently, so
there's no point in making this harder by not knowing the exact
outcome of data entry.

About the bounding box - see the test results I obtained (described in
the initial postings on this thread). It seems that in Romania you can
only use numbers as "Numbered highway" names - the bounding boxes
appear in this case.

Furthermore - are these bounding boxes country-specific in Maps? I
found differences between countries. If so, can we give sample of
official road icons per each road type in Romania so they're used in
Maps? At a minimum, giving different background color per road type
would do.

Dan C.

Hi Dan,
Here is some more clarity about the rules for naming roads :
- The box that is seen in Map Maker over roads is automatically
generated. Ideally, all that is needed is that the complete road be
named consistently. For example, the following section of E60 is named
consistently:
http://www.google.com/mapmaker?hl=en&q=E+60,+Romania&gw=39&ll=47.086956,22.521973&spn=2.481628,2.529602&z=9&t=h&fid=5136511055806579533:5538075700058795599&iwloc=0_0
and it should have had a yellow box [E60] on it.

- The bounding boxes will also appear if you do not use the "Numbered
Highway" attribute. We have country-wise rules that detect the
numbered highway's and give them the boxes on Map Maker. But, as
acknowledged, this does not seem to be working consistently :(

- For the official road icons that are seen on Maps, they are
generated separately. Here is the Maps icon for E60:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Romania&sll=-3.787522,115.037842&sspn=14.464859,9.536133&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Romania&ll=46.800118,23.238316&spn=0.077733,0.074501&t=h&z=14
If this is not an accurate icon, you can post the pictures of the sign
and we will try to get that on Maps. Here is the issue that Pakistan
mappers had created: http://code.google.com/p/google-mapmaker/issues/detail?id=112
FYI: It does take a considerable amount of time for the icons to get
updated :)

Having said that, I understand that having a user friendly help page
for this info would be great. We will definitely work on it and let
you know.

Thanks & Regards,
Map Maker Guide.

Map Maker Guide,

OK, we're progressing. So the bounding box rules are country-specific,
which explains why it's broken for Romania.

1. You say the bounding boxes would appear even when only Preferred is
used as road name. Why was Numbered highway then added? It's redundant
info and just confuses the users. You need to decide between these two
approaches:
- either "detect" the road number based on the country rules - in this
case the road name must comply to the country's official format, e.g.
DNxx for national highways; the bounding box would display the road
number extracted from the name
- let the user choose by using Numbered highway - in this case the
bounding box displays the name "as-is". No number validation or
whatever, just display the numbered highway name in the bounding box.

Should I point out the second method is more flexible? :). I can add
these comments to the original issue in the tracker, if necessary.

2. About the icons in Maps: European roads (Exx) work correctly in
Romania, and the icon is correct. Problem is we need different icons
for different road priorities. Even worse, we don't know the already
available icons (in Maps) - maybe they are already correct. Is it
possible to give us a link with the available bounding box icons for
Romania?

Dan C.

You might have noticed that the roads marked 'Numbered Highway' have
started showing up after the recent update. Link:
http://www.google.com/mapmaker?hl=en&fll=44.866516,24.89562&fr=0.001217,0.001717&mpp=3.385857&gw=39&ll=44.867793,24.901586&spn=0.038354,0.041327&z=15&iwloc=0_0&fid=4661995750288285813:16339407562260804410&dtab=overview
The boxes are still not rendering though. I will let you know of any
updates. Please feel free to create the issue tracker entry based on
your thoughts.

As the data for Romania was updated on Google Maps, here is how the
icon looks:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Bucharest,+Romania&sll=45.802598,24.795284&sspn=0.158324,0.149174&g=45.80882,24.791336&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Bucharest,+Romania&ll=44.436905,26.396756&spn=0.04054,0.037293&z=15

If that icon does not depict reality, you can post an enhancement
request on the Issue Tracker with the picture of the icon.

For example, Pakistan users had posted this on the Issue Tracker
( http://code.google.com/p/google-mapmaker/issues/detail?id=112 ) and
now have a cool icon as seen here:
http://www.google.com/mapmaker?hl=en&fll=25.277758,68.019136&fr=0.000194,0.000215&mpp=0.539987&gw=12&ll=25.332632,68.141863&spn=0.006434,0.004946&z=18

Map Maker Guide,

1. Thanks for fixing the numbered highway display issue. You haven't
answered about which approach to use for the bounding box names
though... I'll make an issue with the latter option (which is the best
in my opinion).

2. The icon you sampled is the one for european roads and freeways. As
initially stated, it is correct and should not be changed.
However we also have a red icon, shown here:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=47.804162,25.931511&spn=0.07921,0.154324&z=13.
This appears for national highways and secondary roads, or so it seems
(which is only partly correct - the icon is perfect for highways but
wrong for secondaries). So I was actually asking for some insider info
- whether you have any other icons already in the database that we
don't know about, so I know what to write in the issue tracker.

About the icons: we're speaking here of Maps icons. But, is it
possible to introduce some differences for the Map Maker bounding
boxes (also in relation with the discussion on the numbered highway
issues). That is, even when you fixed the bounding boxes in Map Maker,
they would still be all the same, regardless of road type. Is it
possible to make bounding boxes different (e.g. different background
color) per road type? Using actual icons is too much (after all Map
Maker is pretty much a "developer tool"), but having all numbered
highway roads display the same bounding box regardless of priority is
quite odd and confusing.

Regards,
Dan C.

to Map Your World - Issues & troubleshooting
Hi again,

1. Please do create the issue. At this point in time I could not
answer your question about the need for the options as they do not
seem to be working as intended. I'll have to get back to you on this.

2. Oops, I should have mentioned this, the icons will now be rendering
the same way both on Google Maps & Map Maker. Which is why I posted
the MM link for Pakistan. After the data push, that is how it will
look on both interfaces.

3. If the Icon for secondaries is not correct, please create an Issue
Tracker entry as elaborated earlier mentioning the priority type.
(Though it might take some time to be fixed)

4. There can be different icons for different priorities. Check out
the icons for N5 (Primary) & M-2 (Controlled Access) here:
http://www.google.com/mapmaker?hl=en&fll=31.46663,74.229877&fr=0.000732,0.000858&mpp=2.037452&gw=39&ll=31.463829,74.227731&spn=0.024288,0.019784&z=16&iwloc=0_0&fid=4114322050473529241:7729826516828251874

Hope that answers your questions {except no.1 :-) }

Regards,
Map Maker Guide.
