I noticed an article today on MinnPost. AOL's Patch is coming some TC
suburbs. Patch is their 'hyper-local' news service.

The thing that may be of interest to MN OSM'ers is that the $1 Million
that AOL has pledged to help improve OSM is to be focused on cities
covered by Patch.

So, there might be an opportunity to get some money from AOL for a
local project. (If we can come up with a good one...)

David.

Yes! This is great news. I'm working closely with the MapQuest people to try and get as much money out as possible to fund cool local mapping projects.

Speaking of which, is anyone interested in a fall mapping party? Can anyone think of somewhere that needs some map love and would be fun to see in Fall?

What about mapping Como Zoo and/or Como Park this fall?

There have been projects to map other zoos (many in Germany). Como
Zoo currently only has the outline mapped and a couple buildings
(Conservatory). MapQuest shows a bit more detail but
openstreetmap.org doesn't.

This sounds great. They're open 10am - 4pm through March. Anyone up for a weekend trip with the GPSs? Zoos are very fun to map!

Como sounds great as I live only six blocks from it.  I would prefer to start earlier to maybe finish up by 2:00 or so to still have some of the afternoon left.

Could someone remind me of what minimum level of equipment is required to be able to partipate? Maybe this would be good information to have on the webpage.

Thanks,

Hello

This isn't official, but I'll give my opinion.

The minimum I'd suggest (again, not official) would be paper and
pencil. If you did this, you could take notes as to where things are,
and update points of interest at desktop computer when you return
home.

The maximum you'd probably need would be: GPS that stores a track log,
digital camera (remember card reader or transfer cable), Laptop
computer, internet access (cellular data, wifi, etc), software
pre-installed (JOSM, or another). Anything in between the minimum and
maximum would be helpful.

The openstreemap website has a "Howto" document on having a mapping
party: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mapping_Weekend_Howto
That page has a list of what they recommend for a good mapping party.

Some of us have extra hardware as well, like GPS, laptops, etc. So,
if you show up with nothing at all, there still be may things to do.

You, your feet (for walking) and hands (for mapping) are all that are required.

A laptop (for digitizing data), digital camera (for quickly capturing information), and GPS are all optional but helpful.
