I had a number of great phone conversations yesterday, including Brett
who gave Map Kibera a real challenge:

On the streets of Kibera, how would you explain the
immediate value of mapping?

Most of my thinking is kind of abstract .. open knowledge, leading to
awareness, discussion, improvement and less duplication of services,
cooperation among NGOs.

We're starting to think about having several workshop days, directed
towards NGOs, local techies, and other groups, to make them aware of
the map, assess map needs, facilitate projects, and build up a
sustained community around this data. This is still not a direct,
immediate impact on people.

We'll print maps for distribution within Kibera. But that's just one
small thing.

How else can Map Kibera have an impact? Ideas and connections to
people with answers please!

It is a worthwhile challenge. This is where input from organizations like Pamoja become important...

Daudi, got contacts with Pamoja NGO?

Thanks .. how do you think the map can help with the two projects you mention, to improve road access to the clinic, and provide resources within the Digital Village?

Most communities in the developed world now have extensive planning processes, including public consultation, expert input, and of course maps. I'm sure the factors involved in improving road access are incredibly complicated .. mapping the alternative routes, the impacts it would have on current structures, the benefits to other community resources .. all in a public map based discussion space could greatly aid the process. Besides a road to the clinic, there are probably hundreds of other ideas on improving access in Kibera. The map becomes a place for contemplation and discussion of possibilities, grounded in a clear accessible artifact.

OSM mapping is only the beginning of how digital resources, NGOs can be linked together. It can be a show case of Open Knowledge. A map is a key component of any Digital Village.

And, the Kibera Photo Project .. that looks so cool! Any more you can tell us about how that came to be? We'll for sure have this visible in our aerial imagery :)

I think there are a few ways especially with the digital village thing.
