Thanks .. how do you think the map can help with the two projects you mention, to improve road access to the clinic, and provide resources within the Digital Village?
Most communities in the developed world now have extensive planning processes, including public consultation,
expert input, and of course maps. I'm sure the factors involved in
improving road access are incredibly complicated .. mapping the
alternative routes, the impacts it would have on current structures,
the benefits to other community resources .. all in a public map based
discussion space could greatly aid the process. Besides a road to the
clinic, there are probably hundreds of other ideas on improving access
in Kibera. The map becomes a place for contemplation and discussion of
possibilities, grounded in a clear accessible artifact.
OSM mapping is only the beginning of how digital resources, NGOs can be linked together. It can be a show case of Open Knowledge. A map is a key component of any Digital Village.
