I am new to this fora and to MapMaker, but I am very interested in
updating the map of the community I live in (as I often get very bad
directions from google). I have started making small edits, ie roads
that exist/dont exist, but every time I do this a moderator will
accept my edit, but often change it and it ends up not being correct.
Also, the changes are not reflected in the overall driving directions.
A few questions:

1. Do you have to edit both the road and the driving directions? (ie
that is not a real road- so when I change it to not a road, why is it
still acceptable as a road for driving directions?)

2. Is there any way to contact the moderator who changed the edit, or
do I just have to change it back?

3. When the road does not exist is there a "Segment Usage" that I can
use for this other than "enclosed parking area/no traffic" because the
moderators keep changing it?

I am starting to get disillusioned with the MapMaker site and google
maps, which I would like to continue to use. If you have any answers
or suggestions for me I would be ever grateful to hear them.

Thank you, Kelsey

Hi Kelsey,
 Welcome to Map Maker! :-)

To answer your questions,

1. You can edit the road's attributes to make the necessary changes. For more information on road attributes, this help article should be useful - http://maps.google.com/support/bin/static.py?page=guide.cs&guide=30028&topic=30119&answer=1067411  Also to understand marking the road priorities better refer to http://maps.google.com/support/bin/static.py?page=guide.cs&guide=30028&topic=30119&answer=191005
Could you please post a link to the area where you do not see driving directions getting updated?

2. For a published feature, if you wish to contact the reviewer, you may click on the 'Details' link for the feature and use the 'Reply to comments' link in the 'History' section.

3. In this case, are you referring to a road which doesn't exist at all? or is it a road with limited or no vehicular access? Could you post a link to the road so that i may address your query better.

Please feel free to post back if you have any questions for us. The mapping community would be more than glad to help you out. Happy Mapping :-)

Regards,
Rohit

First of all, thank you for your response. To clarify ( since none of
my questions really make sense without this vital piece of
information ) I have been trying to delete a road that no longer
exists and identify a gated community which only has one functional
entrance and no longer 3. To answer your questions and pose more, if
you'll allow:

1. Thank you, I found that page before, and it was very helpful.
Unfortunately there is not an option for "road no longer exists",
which was my ultimate problem (sorry again for not stating that
clearly)
.
2. When I click "details" I do not see a 'history' section. I have a
'more' button which allows me to change attributes, but no 'history'?
Am I missing something?

3. There are three streets which I am speaking about specifically:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&t=h&msa=0&msid=104496168363921958353.0004974cdd131dc8d5bb2&ll=27.682122,85.313355&spn=0.006584,0.013025&z=17
Please excuse the really bad drawing, when I did draw a line with the
road it linked them altogether since they are close to each other, and
it was the first time I used the program.

Thank you for your help!
Kelsey

So today... After completely deleting all the "Enclosed parking areas"
and creating new roads, the edits were approved- however the moderator
had to change it so that there could be no access (or so thats what
their comment said). But in the last edit, After chaning it back to a
normal road, and changing its attributes 4 comments later we've agreed
that its a non-accessible road, but there is a street there, so since
its just used as a drive way for the houses, we're agreeing its an
enclosed parking area and they asked me to change it to that... I feel
like you cant win here. Will walk around with my IPad and my camera
and update as much as I can- wishing there was a way to attach a PHOTO
with the edits made.

Hi Kelsey,
Thank you for posting back.

1. To delete a road which no longer exists:
  • Right click on the road and select ‘Find near this point’ to select the road
  • Click on ‘more’ and select ‘Delete this’
  • In the ‘Reason for deleting’ drop-down, select the appropriate reason
  • Add a comment in the ‘Comments to the edit reviewer’ text box for the review to understand the purpose of deletion better

2. Is the issue with the feature’s edit history still persisting? If so, could you please file this on the Issue Tracker so that we can track it better

3. About the roads to which you had posted links to:
This currently is marked as a private road. As you had mentioned that this road does not support any level of public transportation and is open only for vehicles with privileges, it fits the description of a private road.
Roads existing inside enclosed areas such as parking lots can have their segment usage as ‘Enclosed traffic area / Parking lot’. The current attributes set for this road ensures that it is no longer used to route traffic.   In this case, since the road no longer exists, you can delete it as mentioned in point no 1 above.

You can add a photo URL for PoIs on MapMaker. Another way to add photographs to maps would be using Panoramio. Visit http://www.panoramio.com/ to upload your photos. The help section for this site explains the process of selecting photos for Google Earth & Maps.

Hope this clarifies and helps you to map your region better :-)

Regards,
Rohit

Thats all great- fortunately, today all of my edits were accepted.
Unfortunately, every time I tried to just delete the road, a Moderator
would deny it. Also, Moderators would force me to remove the "Enclosed
parking area" then told me to delete it completely. Once I deleted it,
another Moderator told me to Undo that deletion and call it an
Enclosed parking area.

So very frustrating. (but they're good enough for now, I think)

Another question.

In Kathmandu, if you look at the Map view versus the Satelite view,
you will see that the map has almost NO features, just roads. Often
the roads that were created in map view dont directly correspond with
the satelite image- so that when you click a building (in satelite
view) and give it a Name- ie a business- then in the map view this
will be in the middle of the street.

Questions:

1. Should I correct the street to more closely related to what is on
the Satellite view?
2. Should I add features for every building- or should i just name the
Satellite images?
3. When there are shops, which are more like street vendors working
out of someones home, and they dont have an OFFICIAL name or working
hours, can I name them (for what they are). Or are we only to identify
official business? (ie theres no signage, theres no regular business
hours- but the moderators will not approve without proper names/
hours).

Thanks!

Hi Kelsey,
I hope your experiences with the tool have helped you understand it better.

1. Yes. Add/Edit the streets in the satellite view with the ‘Show labels’ box checked.
2. Using your knowledge of the area, you can add new features using one of the categories we have. For features added already, you can edit them to add more information if need be.
3. If the business you are trying to mark doesn’t fall into one of the categories provided, you could choose ‘Business’ as the category. You could select a more appropriate category from the ‘Additional Category’ drop-down in the left pane or add one.

Hope this resolves your queries

Regards,
Rohit
