"Nā tō rourou, nā taku rourou - ka ora ai te iwi"

Kia ora koutou

“With your food basket and my food basket, the people will thrive”.

Nga mihi mahana ki nga GIS kaimahi

We are pleased to announce further details of the 2010 Maori GIS
conference to be held in Whanganui a Tara / Wellington over 2 days in
September this year. The conference kaupapa is "Nā tō rourou, nā taku
rourou - ka ora ai te iwi" which reflects the korero/patai from last
year that revolved around sharing (whether it be data or management or
simple “how to’s”). Several presenters from last years’ conference
will provide updates on their projects (and there’s some new projects
too).

The conference is being held mid week so hopefully people have already
looked at those mid week specials to secure their best flight options.
Don’t forget to check Grabaseat too.

Registration.

As previously advised, the registration fee for this years’ conference
is $100 per delegate.

Te Maru o Rangiwewehi won the ArcGIS software package last year and
are a formal legal entity with progressive goalsand excellent internal
structures. They have enerously offered to be our financial support
service provider for this years’ conference (cheers). They will be
handling all the financial aspects of our conference and we have
developed this registration process in conjunction with them.

To register:

Email your registration details to 2010MaoriGI...@gmail.com.

Include your name/s, your address, your organisation, your email and
phone contact. Email addresses are important to ensure prompt
invoicing and receipt confirmation.

The registration details will be forwarded to the financial whizz at
Te Maru o Rangiwewehi who will then generate an invoice for you.
Payment details will be included on the invoice (e.g. direct credit
bank account number or physical address for cheques). Delegates will
then have a choice whether to pay their registration fee over the
counter (via eftpos, cash or credit card), make an online payment or
send their cheque payment to our financial service provider.

Payment receipts and confirmation of registration will also be sent
out directly to the delegate via Te Maru o Rangiwewehi.

Venue: GNS Science Ltd, 1 Fairway Drive, Avalon, Lower Hutt.

GNS Science (Geological Nuclear Sciences) have made the committee a
fantastic offer to hold the conference at their larger venue in Lower
Hutt (just 20 minutes from Wellington CBD). The conference venue is
GNS Science Ltd at 1 Fairway Drive, Avalon, Lower Hutt. There is a
large conference presentation theatre room plus several breakout rooms
available. As expected from the ex-Avalon/Peter Jackson studio
buildings, the IT and audio/visual capabilities are very good. Parking
should not be an issue at this venue.

Accommodation options.

A quick google search found 10 different accommodation options within
a four kilometre radius of the venue. Ranging in price from $100 -
$200 per night (for a two/three bedroom suite), accommodation close
the venue appears to be affordable (even better for those who wish to
share). The committee is tapping in to local knowledge to get the best
accommodation options and that information will be forwarded to
everyone as soon as it is to hand.

Forum discussion topics.

There are a number of discussion topics that have been put forward for
this years forum. One of the more interesting ones is the notion of
forming a professional association. What do you think? Does the idea
have merit? Have a think about what else you would like to see
discussed at the forum and send it along to the committee. We’ll make
sure it
gets on the agenda.

Logo competition.

We all know people who have creative and artistic abilities. The
committee has decided to initiate a logo competition for those who
want to have a go at creating a logo for our fledgling movement. Any
medium works, as long as it is able to be morphed in to a digital
image. Entries will be open right up to the start of the conference
and the winner will be announced by public acclaim (e.g. delegates get
to vote and the most votes wins). Acknowledgements, IP and all the
formal work will be completed with the winner. The prize will be
announced at the hui. So, come on all you graphic designers/artists –
have a go.

Final call for presentations.

A final call for those interested in sharing their experiences/
projects. You are invited to submit a short bio (for the conference
programme) and a short (a paragraph or so) description of their
presentation (so we can try and group presentations if applicable).
For those who presented last year, the steering committee urges you to
seriously consider presenting this year to update us and share your
korero about your GIS journey. Remember our format: 15 minute
presentations, 5 minute Q&A and panel sessions and our focus: Maori
GIS projects and GIS related projects relevant to
Maori aspirations. All abstracts are to be submitted to
2010Maorigi...@gmail.com . They will be forwarded to the
committee for consideration and you will be notified as soon as
possible.

Last year, over 100 delegates representing iwi/roopu from Muriwhenua
to Murihiku enjoyed the conference. Presentation ranged from heritage
mapping to environment mapping and monitoring to government projects,
and more. This is our opportunity to move forward on this kaupapa.
