New format for newsletter
We've made the Expert Data Users newsletter even easier to read with a
new online format and design.

It still contains all the same type of information that we've included
in the past.

If you have trouble viewing the newsletter please click 'View online'
in the top right corner.

We hope you enjoy it!

Key Findings: Sustainable Development
In addition to the release of the report Measuring New Zealand's
Progress Using a Sustainable Development Approach: 2008, a brochure is
also available online that presents 16 key findings from the report.

It assesses whether New Zealand is moving towards or away from
sustainable development using four main questions; how well do we
live, how well are resources distributed, how efficiently are we using
our resources, and what are we leaving behind for our children?

Official Statistics Forum 2010
Every few years the users and producers of official statistics meet to
share their knowledge and experience of the Official Statistics System
(OSS).

The Official Statistics Forum will be held in Wellington across two
days, 24–25 March 2010. The theme of the forum is realising the value
of official statistics. The event will feature a mix of keynotes
speakers, panel discussions, and concurrent sessions.

We now welcome the submission of papers for the concurrent sessions by
those working in any area of official statistics: production, analysis
or representation. Abstracts should be submitted by Monday 14
September. For more information about the submission process click
here.

PANZ Conference 2009
The biennial Population Association of New Zealand (PANZ) Conference
will be held in Wellington on Monday 31 August and Tuesday 1 September
2009. Registrations are still open. The theme this year is 'Distinct
Communities, Diverse Populations, Different Futures: Towards 2030′. We
have received over 50 papers and it is shaping up to be a full and
interesting two days.

The conference is of relevance to anyone who has an interest in
population trends and issues. This includes people studying, teaching
or working in the fields of demography, sociology, sustainability,
planning, geography, and economics, and local and central government
researchers, planners and policy makers.

Go to the PANZ website for more details.

Mäori Social Survey Discussion Document
Statistics New Zealand has released He Kohinga Whakaaro / Mäori Social
Survey Discussion Document. This paper outlines a proposal to develop
a Mäori Social Survey that focuses on addressing a number of key
social and cultural information needs. The purpose of this discussion
paper is to confirm that these information needs are correct, by
seeking your feedback on the proposal to develop a Mäori Social
Survey. A draft model for collecting information is also outlined for
your comment.
Submissions should be sent by the end of September 2009, in order to
be fully considered. Statistics NZ will decide the final content of
the survey.

Structural Change and the 65+ Population articles
Structural Change and the 65+ Population contains a series of articles
that give a statistical overview of the impact of compositional change
in the age structure of New Zealand's population, with a special
emphasis on those aged 65 years and over (the 65+ population). It
draws on information from a number of statistical collections as well
as New Zealand and international research.

New Zealand definition of homelessness
The New Zealand definition of homelessness was developed to be adopted
and applied by a wide range of users. In a country where housing
services are delivered by a range of providers in both government and
the community, the definition aims to assist those diverse
organisations develop consistent approaches to collecting and
reporting data.

The current definition does not purport to be a full and final
definition of all information that may be relevant in relation to
homelessness, and the associated classification is draft only.
Statistics NZ will continue to monitor and review the definition over
time so that any gaps can be identified and refinements applied where
necessary.
