Kia ora whanau

It would seem we have been spammed.
Can anyone advise as to what we can do to resolve this.

I guess this would be an opportune time to ask the question - Do we
need to appoint some form of committee or management structure. It
would definitely seem necessary to appoint a "cyber-team".

Comments most welcome, actually comments are necessary.

I think it would be useful to appoint a few folks to 'manager' status.
I am prepared to take on some admin responsibilities and ensure that
the site is being used appropriately. Who currently has 'owner' status
for the group?

A search about managing spam in Google Groups led to this useful post
thread. I have reproduced the relevant section below.

Seemingly spammers are becoming able to bypass group safety settings
when the groups are on Anyone can join, or Anyone can post, and/or All
messages are held for moderation.
Till now, these settings seem safe:
* Under "Who can join?" select "People can request an invitation to
join"
* Under "Who can post messages?" select "Members only"
* Under "Message moderation" select "Messages from new members are
moderated"

If you don't like these settings, and you're spammed, an alternative
could be to quickly add and ban the spammer. At least, he will be
blocked as possible sender, hopefully forever.

Another suggestion from the Open Bar Camp group:

Set "New member postings are moderated" to true. This seems to be an
approach that is simple, effective and not as restrictive as the
method laid out in my earlier post in this thread.

Hey folks,
Whoever is the admin for the group, can you please change the mailing
list
settings to "first post is moderated"? Basically the first time
someone
sends a message to the group one of the admins has to approve it,
after that
they're free to post. Gets rid of the spam pretty effectively.

Regards,

Rob :)

I'm keen and I have a little bit of experience moderating online
communities.
