customising symbology

Kiaora guys, just found you all here so kiaora to all, and yes I am
still battling with this problem...To update:I have converted a jpg to
pns format so now the background is transparent, so why am I not able
to upload this file type to my symbol folder in style manager?! I
think this is a very important requirement for Maori GIS technicians
as we like to use our own unique images and designs - especially to
map our special places and spaces. There may be a koha in it for the
person who can give me a shortcut (that works) to resolving this
problem....
I find the built-in symbols too often reflect someone else's values
(in place/space), they are dull, uninteresting and never quite meet
expectations no matter how much you alter their properties. Their ok
for core/basic info of course, but if someone can make this function
easier that would be great for me, and potentially provide some
innovative ways of visualising places and spaces.

Hi Bernie,
try using BMP - or EMF format, I think you are coming up against not so much a problem of ArcGIS but of image format. I remember coming up against a similar issue some months ago.

Kia ora Duane, I think I've already tried this method but I'll give it
a go again and let you know how I get on. If it works I'll be sure to
sort out that koha lol. The problem is that when you save a file as
bmp or emf format the background is no longer transparent. The
transparency function in Arcmap I've found previously is for the
foreground or total image only and does not make the background
transparent for use as a symbol. Pns is the only format I've found so
far to make a picture background transparent. Will be back with an
update asap.
