Nga mihi mahana ki nga GIS kaimahi
We are pleased to announce the second, software neutral, conference
about GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for
Maori practitioners and/or those Roopu interested in its application.
If you use Arc or MapInfo or Geomedia or Open Source or just have an
interest in what is happening in GIS within Te Ao
Maori – the conference is an opportunity to share and learn. For those
who attended last year’s conference in Otautahi,
you will remember that there was a lot of korero/patai revolving
around sharing. Conversations moved around shared
data management streams or data sharing agreements as well as requests
to share information e.g. ‘where did you get
that data to set that project up?’. This topic has continued to become
the theme for this years conference.
The steering committee that was formed on the last day of the 2009
conference is hard at work organising the 2010
conference which is to be held in Wellington in September during the
midweek (so you can all take advantage of
midweek flight prices). We’ll send out full details in the near
future.
This panui is simply a ‘heads up’ to let you know that the conference
is happening this year; that we are committed to
being a platform neutral conference, and, given the realities of the
current economic climate, we’ve tried to keep the
conference as low cost and accessible as possible and have set a
registration fee at $100 per delegate.
The registration site will be up in the next few weeks however, we’d
like to get the ball rolling as far as presentations are
concerned.
Those interested in sharing their experiences/projects are invited to
submit a short bio (for the conference programme)
and a short (a paragraph or so) description of their presentation (so
we can try and group presentations if applicable).
For those who presented last year, the steering committee urges you to
seriously consider presenting this year to
update us and share your korero about your GIS journey. Remember our
format: 15 minute presentations, 5 minute
Q&A and panel sessions and our focus: Maori GIS projects and GIS
related projects relevant to Maori aspirations
Last year, over 100 delegates representing iwi/roopu from Muriwhenua
to Murihiku enjoyed the conference.
Presentation ranged from heritage mapping to environment mapping and
monitoring to government projects, and
more. This is our opportunity to move forward on this kaupapa.
