                                                Business Report

January 17th 72nd Pacific Ave Safe Streets Business Meeting had a great turn out.  Thanks to all the help from Safe Streets Staff and Neighborhood Volunteers. Thanks to City staff for attending,TPD, City Council Members Beale and Hunter for attending.  Next Business meeting will be February 21, 1pm same location.  One thing that was great to see was several apartment managers attending.  I need to encourage more managers to attend.   One thing disappointing was hearing several managers state they would attend, then never show up.  I will encourage the local managers to attend one more time, then reach out to their district managers.

Talked to new owners of Morgan.  Mel is the resident owner.  Met with security too.  Heard about their plans to secure the motel.  I discussed some of the suspicious people who were hanging around the place two weeks ago.  My description of one female was one who has been kicked off the property before.  I did see Mel one day kick off the property a man and woman. Mel has had to call police one time.  The Morgan for the past two weeks has been one of the cleanest businesses in the area. We discussed the issues of the old pot shop area.  He gave me some good info on who to look for.

I need to get a hold of Scott the new strip mall owner. Inform him of the suspecious activity we have observed.  George the three year homeless guy has been attracting the wrong crowd over at the strip mall area.  He attracts the heroin junkies which in turns attract drug dealers.

Fred Meyers will have their remodel in mid June.  McDonalds inside is shut down for their remodel project.

The homeless camp site 8439 Pacific Ave, large empty lot, I noticed looked like the homeless left.  I filed code complaint, about homeless on property and the huge amount of garbage. I contacted the owners, Tom Young from Azure property. Explained to Mr. Young about the issue and the huge garbage mess. He did apologize and admitted his company has neglected the property.  We discussed the issues and what his company would need to do and work with the city.  Mr. Young did not realize the trespassing issues and would work with the city to sign a trespassing agreement. I emailed Keith Williams from City Code. Keith emailed me back in a short time and said his office would contact Mr.Young that day.  This empty lot has been effecting the local businesses in the area too.

Richard Gardner one of our Safe Streets Leaders and Citizen Member to City Transportation is working with Pierce Transit to make a presentation on the BRT to the business managers in their March Meeting.

Dave another Safe Streets Leader from our group has been watching-paroling the businesses that asked for our help to watch their property.

                                              Neighborhood report

Our 6538 has had a constant stream of people coming going and Pierce County Deputies.  More felony warrant arrests from this home on 1/22 and 1/15.   Drug dog was brought in 1/15 to find if drugs were on the property none were found.  Early morning walk resident’s car trunk was open. Stuffed with tools.  Back packs, people always coming going.  Talked to deputy on 1/15. He agreed this house is a problem house and they were working on it.

U Haul 6414 Yakima Ave, haven’t filed any code complaint. But have a Friend now that may be helpful in the future with the U Haul issues.

Walk the neighborhood early mornings,(getting in my 10000 steps). Odd people walking the area in alleys, in middle of street.

      Always garbage to pickup

Dave chased off two vehicles 70th Pacific Ave. Drug deal.

Almost got hit by a car other morning 76th Pacific Ave. Two weeks ago there was car pedestrian accident there. I had the walk sign, car decided to left turn onto Pacific Ave. 18 inches more and splat!! This is the same area I mention that the city will have to look at for pedestrian safety.  72nd South D. Getting so hard to cross on that corner too. So much traffic and fast speeding traffic too.

Hearing graffiti tagging north of our area.

Called Ken of Walsh Construction, contractor of the light rail project. Today,Sunday, noticed that the 38th Pacific Ave Lay-Down Yard gate was wide open. He was not happy but reassured me he would get the gate closed. I met Ken at the Eastside Community Center during the community information meeting earlier in the month.   Darren Penn:  Once again you were right!!! Connections!!!   Another great way for our Safe Streets to help out.

Will do a liter pick up this week 72nd South D. Will be out talking to managers later this week too for the up coming business meeting.

Still patrolling the Spooner Safe Streets Area too.  Zurich Garbage issue was looking good this past week.  Hope it continues to stay clean. Car I code enforced was towed. Picked up liter on empty lot 7431 Pacific Ave for Stacy.       I’m ready for some warm spring weather.    Thanks once again to all the Safe Streets Staff for helping me organize the 72nd Pacific Ave Safe Streets Business Group. Darren,Sara,Wanda,Priscilla,Julie. and all the ones I have missed.  Paul Chromey Safe Streets Volunteer

Jennie Reed Safe Streets Neighborhood Group’s January Meeting 2019

Hello Neighbors! We had a great meeting last night, reviewing what our 2018 looked like and what we're looking forward to in our neighborhood in 2019, as well as sharing some of our current concerns in the Jennie Reed Neighborhood. I thought I'd share some of what we went over on this post!

·         In 2018, as a group: (all of these amount to an approximate of 375 hours of volunteer time serving our neighbors!) Forgive me if I’ve forgotten anything, you all did an amazing job this year! All of this was accomplished by a few dedicated neighbors, imagine what we could do with more people investing in our community! -Had an average of 10 people attend our monthly meetings each month! -Did multiple litter pick-ups around the neighborhood -A group of Neighbors teamed up to get a bunch of trees planted along their street -Many people volunteered at the annual Neighborhood clean-up, removing TONS of garbage and trash, neighbors also provided and prepared food to feed the volunteers! -We organized and hosted our National Night Out event, closing down a street, and spending some fun time together! -Got artificial Ivy put up on the 38th street retaining wall near the I-5 access, just west of S. Alaska. -An awesome neighbor championed the beautification of roundabouts in South Tacoma, the first one located in our neighborhood, and it was beautified and re-planted! and when plants were stolen, people generously filled them back in! -Many neighbors called 311 many times. Reporting illegal dumping, code compliance issues, blight, etc. -Neighbors were vigilant, calling 911 to report crime in progress and suspicious vehicles/persons/activities -Multiple nuisance/vacant/problem homes were remodeled and sold to new homeowners, increasing property values and quality of life for us all! (3 just on S. Alaska street!) -Tamed the laurel bushes on S. Alaska and 34th -A neighbor helped to stop a home being built directly over a sewer main that serves many neighbors, keeping a plumbing emergency from occuring! -Many neighbors helped out the people near them by mowing lawns, and helping with household projects

·         Goals for 2019: -Increase our visible presence in the neighborhood by doing more litter pick-ups and neighborhood patrols as a group -Be more proactive in planning National Night Out -Find new opportunities to make our Neighborhood a more beautiful and safe place to live! -Help to clean-up a few trouble areas in the Jennie Reed neighborhood

·         A few areas of concern discussed at the meeting:

o    Multiple houses on S. Sheridan with suspicious activity going on. Appears to be drug activity and possible moving of stolen goods. CLO Sbory made note and will be keeping an eye out, he encouraged us all to continue calling that in to have record of the activity. If you live on Sheridan or surrounding streets, please call in any suspicious/illegal activities.

o    Lots of suspicious traffic in and out of Sawyer Park neighbors have reported seeing many drug deals and conflicts happening here. Sad to see a park where our kiddos should feel safe being used for this kind of activity. If you see anything, call it in!

o    Mst Apartments were mentioned that there is a lot of noise issues going on. Loud music at all hours of the night. Lets work toward being considerate to our neighbors, and call in noise violations.

o    Car prowls and break-ins and stolen cars in neighborhoods near us have been on the rise. It’s important for us to keep an eye out, not leave anything valuable in our vehicles and keep things locked up. We’ve been fortunate to not have a lot of this in our neck of the woods yet. Lets try to keep it that way!

·         Annual Jennie Reed Clean-up:

o    May 18th at Jennie Reed parking lot

o    We will be teaming up with East Abes, LAWGs, and Lincoln South groups

o    Our clean-up will serve all of those communities! As that is a larger footprint than previous years, we hope to have more volunteers to help make the work lighter! We’d love to have you volunteer!

o    There will be no shredding this year.
