Hello community members,
I hope this message finds you well and healthy. To care for the most vulnerable populations in Pierce County, the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department will set up a number of temporary care facilities for people in Pierce County during the COVID-19 outbreak. The first temporary care center is likely a hotel or motel facility somewhere central to the County, which will likely mean somewhere in Tacoma.
Due to its high concentration of hotels and motels and accessible location, the Hosmer corridor is being examined as a potential site area for a temporary care center.
I wanted to make sure to reach out to you all as community leaders, businesses, and residents of the area as an advanced notice of this possibility. Things are moving quickly as the Health Dept., City and County continues to respond to this state of emergency. The site will be selected based on a number of criteria and is considered an essential facility in responding to the pandemic.
Pierce County will need several temporary care centers to house vulnerable Pierce County residents exposed to COVID 19 who don’t have a safe place to stay for the 14-day quarantine period. The sites are also for people who tested positive or awaiting test results and don’t need hospital care, but don’t have a safe place to stay. Staying at the center is voluntary. People will only be there if they can’t stay at home and choose to stay at the center. These temporary care centers provide local care without adding to the mounting pressure on the hospital system.
Attached is a handout with more information about the criteria used to select the site and what can be expected from this temporary facility. A number of Health Department staff involved in this site selection process and CC’d here.
We know our area of SE Tacoma deals with a lot of hardships and I realize this type of facility may raise concerns. We need to balance those concerns with the immediate need for these centers as an essential response to COVID-19. Our residents are strong and rise to face challenges every day. We must support them as they support those who would otherwise not have a safe space to recover. The Tacoma-Pierce County Health department’s goal is to provide services and accommodations for language, disability, and other factors to ensure residents of each center have fair, equitable access to services.
The Health department is listening to feedback on their site selection. If you would like to share thoughts or questions, you can reach out to them by phone at (855) 722-5378 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily or email at pccall...@tpchd.org<mailto:pccall...@tpchd.org>.
You may again hear from this team for further input as the facility site selection is finalized. You can reach me at the phone # below (call or text) if you want to follow up; I value your input and feedback. For more technical questions, I would direct you to use the Health Dept. contact info above.
Gratefully in service,

Chris Beale, AICP
