Neighbors

Hi Neighbors,

The reason Safe Streets and other block watch programs work is because neighbors are working together.  I have seen the power of this coming together, many times in our own neighborhood.  

There are things I have experienced in my neighborhood that make me proud to be part of it.

My neighbors have helped my family in ways that usually only a family member would do.  How many times they have helped my kids when they are locked out of the house, fed my animals when we have an emergency ( for a week long once!), gave us a gift of food when Vinny got laid off, shared wonderful food just to be nice, helped with a missing recipe ingredient, shared lawn supplies when ours broke, shared the cost of big machinery to share, called me to let me know one of my kids was doing something dangerous, watched my house, babysat my kids in a pinch, BBQ together, kids having fun together, sharing a celebration, sharing loss.....

How many times we have reached out to our neighbors because we care about them.

This has made it a place I feel safe to raise my children, even in the midst of all the crime.  My kids feel part of a bigger community.  They got to have the experience that people talk about in the "good old days".  To know their neighbors.  To know many of you would help them and watch out for them.  

I think that email can be a difficult way to communicate for many reasons.  Much of the communication is lost.  I know that problems I have with my neighbors are solved more easily when we talk to each other in person.  I also keep in mind that all this neighborly stuff keeps my neighborhood much safer and is an investment in my property.  

This is my long winded email to say I hope we can join together to help each other, solve our neighborhood issues,  and be more forgiving of our neighbors.  It's not easy living with each other but it's harder, living without each other.
