Q. why/what are the holes in the sandstone blocks

A. For those riders on last Thursday's Cammeraygal loop: the holes/sockets in the sandstone block wall at Coal Loader were made and left by the builders, where timber scaffolding, lifting bars, or ratchets bore against the masonry during construction. After the scaffolding or lifting device was removed, the socket remains visible (ref: Quora).
 Now we know.
